Amazon has announced that “limited advertisements” will be added to Prime Video in the US, UK, Germany, and Canada starting from January 29. The company says that these ads will allow it to continue investing in “compelling content” that will increase over a long period.
Subscribers were informed about this development through a letter (via The Verge), which read, “We are writing to you today about an upcoming change to your Prime Video experience.Starting January 29, Prime Video movies and TV shows will include limited advertisements. This will allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time.”
Amazon says that Prime Video will have “meaningfully fewer ads” than television and other streaming platforms.
Subscribers will not need to do anything, and there is no change to the pricing of Prime membership. Amazon is introducing a new ad-free subscription tier, which will be available for an additional $2.99 per month in the US. Prime Video subscribers can pre-register for the monthly ad-free option but will not be billed until January 29.
There will not be any ads on the purchased content. Additionally, the residents of Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Guam, the Mariana Islands, and American Samoa will not be affected by this change for the time being.
Amazon plans to expand advertisements to France, Italy, Spain, Mexico, and Australia later in 2024. There is no word on if or when the ads will be shown on Prime Video in India.

We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers. Ads in Prime Video content will be introduced in the U.S., U.K., Germany, and Canada in early 2024, followed by France, Italy, Spain, Mexico, and Australia later in the year. No action is required for Prime members. We’re not making changes in 2024 to the current price of Prime membership. We will also offer a new ad-free option for an additional $2.99 per month* for U.S. Prime members and will share pricing for other countries at a later date,” Amazon wrote in a blog, in September, announcing the plans to bring ads on Prime Video.

In a major move against tech giants, Japan is preparing regulations that could see Apple fined and forced to allow alternative app stores on its iOS devices. This follows growing international scrutiny over the dominance of major platforms like Apple and Google in the mobile app market.Japan’s move echoes similar actions taken by other countries and regions. The European Union has already indicated that Apple will have no choice but to allow side loading of apps on the iPhone.

What Japan plans to do

According to a report by Nikkei Asia, the planned legislation, expected to be submitted next year, aims to curb anti-competitive practices within the Japanese tech landscape. The Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) would be empowered to impose fines for violations, potentially reaching up to 6% of revenue generated from the offending activities.
One of the most significant changes would be requiring Apple and Google to open their platforms to competition, allowing users to download apps from outside their official app stores. Currently, iOS devices solely rely on the App Store for app installation, while Android offers some flexibility but still retains control over default apps and payments.
Additionally, the JFTC is concerned about the high commission fees (15-30%) charged by Apple and Google to app developers. These fees have long been a source of friction, with developers arguing that they stifle innovation and raise consumer prices. The new law might address this by placing limits on commission rates or allowing alternative payment methods within apps.
Apple, on its part, has defended its App Store policies, arguing that they ensure security and quality for users. However, the company may face a difficult choice in Japan: adapt to the new regulations or risk potential fines and a smaller market share.

The US has officially banned the import and sale of Apple Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 models after US President Biden’s administration declined to veto an agency’s decision to restrict the wearables. The move follows an October ruling by the International Trade Commission (ITC) that certain Apple Watch models infringed the blood oxygen saturation technology patented by a medical tech company called Masimo. The affected Apple watches feature a blood oxygen (SpO2) monitoring feature. The Cupertino giant is appealing the federal government ban. An Apple spokesperson said that the company strongly disagrees with the ITC’s order.

Apple on Tuesday (December 26) appealed (via Reuters) a decision to ban sales and imports of its latest wearables based on a complaint from Masimo after President Joe Biden’s administration declined to veto USITC earlier today. In a statement, an Apple spokesperson said that it strongly disagrees with the USITC decision and resulting exclusion order, and will be “taking all measures to return the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 to customers in the US as soon as possible.” The California-based Masimo earlier claimed that Apple’s pulse reader feature infringes on its pulse-oximeter technology.

The iPhone maker has filed an emergency request for the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit to halt the ban. It requested the Federal Circuit for a temporary stay on the ban at least until US Customs and Border Protection considers redesigned versions of its watches infringe Masimo’s patents by January 12.

A statement from the Office of US Trade Representative Katherine Tai said the agency “decided not to reverse the ITC’s determination” after “careful consideration.” The government tribunal’s order will go into effect on December 26, barring imports and sales of Apple Watches that use patent-infringing technology for monitoring blood-oxygen levels. Apple had already paused the sale of Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 in the US on its website on December 21 and from its store shelves after December 24.

The ITC issued the ban in October this year after finding that Apple infringed on blood oxygen saturation technology patented by Masimo. The tribunal ordered Apple to pause selling any previously imported devices with the blood oxygen pulse oximeter sensor. The order was followed by the 60-day Presidential Review Period that expired on December 25.

The Apple Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 are still available for purchase outside the US. Also, the latest move does not affect the Apple Watch SE as the budget-friendly wearable does not feature a SpO2 sensor. Apple has included a SpO2 tracker in every wearable since its Series 6 model in 2020.

Bitcoin on Wednesday, December 27, reflected a small loss of 2.71 percent. Despite this slight decline, Bitcoin managed to retain its price above the level of $42,000 (roughly Rs. 34.9 lakh) and is currently trading at $42,218 (roughly Rs. 35 lakh). This is the third consecutive day that BTC is trading above $42,000. However, in the last three days, BTC has dropped in value by $688 (roughly Rs. 57,270). BTC’s crucial resistance stands at $44,500 (roughly Rs. 37 lakh) and $42,500 (roughly Rs. 35.3 lakh) as a support level.

“Today, Bitcoin experienced a decline in price as traders swiftly closed their positions amidst rising funding rates, leading to a shift from optimistic to pessimistic market sentiment. Amid expectations of a year-end surge and the impending US SEC verdict on a Bitcoin ETF, an increase in trading volume indicates sustained market engagement amid these evolving scenarios,” Rajagopal Menon, Vice President, Wazir told Gadgets360.

Ether registered a minor dip of 0.75 percent on Wednesday. At the time of writing, ETH was trading at $2,220 (roughly Rs. 1.84 lakh). For ETH, the key resistance stands at $2,380 (roughly Rs. 1.98 lakh) whereas its critical support level stands at $2,250 (roughly Rs. 1.87 lakh).

A bunch of altcoins reflected losses on Wednesday. These include Ripple, Cardano, Avalanche, Dogecoin, and Polkadot.

Tron, Chainlink, and Shiba Inu also reflected price dips on Tuesday.

The total crypto market cap dropped by 0.27 percent in the last 24 hours. The valuation of the sector currently stands at $1.65 trillion (roughly Rs. 1,37,46,414 crore), as per CoinMarketCap. However, the crypto fear and greed index looks positive and has increased by 2 points since yesterday.

“The market is currently at a critical juncture with a narrow range, as both bulls and bears vie for control,” Edul Patel,Co-Founder and CEO, Mudrex told Gadgets360.

Meanwhile, only a small number of cryptocurrencies showed profits on Wednesday. These are Tether, Solana, Binance Coin, USD Coin, Polygon, and Wrapped Bitcoin.

Small profits were also minted by Uniswap, Leo, Monero, Elrond, Binance USD, and Bitcoin SV.

“One of the top performers after this crash turned out to be Polygon. Its native token MATIC (+11 percent) crossed a dollar mark in almost seven months. This came as Binance native coin BNB (+6.8 percent) also saw some gains and crossed the 300-dollar mark for the first time in six months. Both of these tokens, along with SOL (-7.1 percent) were part of the token lists SEC accused of being securities backed in June this year,” the CoinSwitch Markets Desk told Gadgets360.

Japan is reportedly working on new regulations that will require big tech giants including Google and Apple to permit app downloading from outside their official app stores — Google Play, App Store. The legislation is expected to be sent to parliament next year. The two tech companies are currently facing regulations from various governments to open their in-built app stores and allow users to install apps from third-party sources. The iPhone maker is expected to bring changes to its App Store policies to comply with the European Union’s new Digital Markets Act (DMA).

As per a new report by Nikkei Asia, the Japanese government is preparing laws that will require Apple and Google as well as other similar companies to allow users to download apps outside their official app stores and let alternative payment methods for any apps. With the latest move, the government aims to stimulate competition and curb abuse of the tech giant’s dominant position in the Japanese market.

The legislation is reportedly slated for submission to parliament next year. The legislation could focus on four areas — app stores and payments, search, browsers, and operating systems. Once approved, the regulations would allow the Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) to impose fines on companies for antitrust issues. It would be able to fine firms up to 6 percent of the revenue generated from illegal activities. More details about the regulations are expected to be out before spring next year. 

The legislation is expected to let Japanese companies to have third-party app stores on iOS and Android platforms. Developers might also be able to choose payment systems from local firms with lower service charges.

Japan’s rumoured antitrust legislation seems to be similar to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act. The DMA is expected to come into full force in 2024. As per DMA, companies with more than 45 million monthly active users and a EUR 75 billion (roughly Rs. 670 crore) market capitalisation are to be considered gatekeepers providing a core platform service. The DMA requires Apple to enable developers to publish their iOS apps outside of the App Store.

Apple is reportedly working on allowing users in the European Union to sideload iPhone apps. An upcoming iOS version is expected to enable sideloading of apps in select regions.

CBS, Paramount-parent National Amusements reports data breach affecting over 80,000 people

National Amusements, the parent company of CBS and Paramount, has reported a hack that took place last year. The company revealed the information about the hack in a legal filing with Maine’s Attorney General, as reported by TechCrunch.
The breach has affected 82,128 people. The company has started informing affected individuals as of last week. It is not clear whether only employee data or customer data was stolen.
In December 2022, National Amusements suffered a data breach resulting in the compromise of the personal information of 82,128 individuals, including 64 residents of Maine. The breach may have involved internal employee data, though specific personal information that was compromised has not been disclosed.
“On or about December 15, 2022, National Amusements became aware of suspicious activity in our computer network,” the notification sent to affected individuals reads. “We immediately took steps to secure our network and minimise any disruption to our operations.”
The “data breach discovered” is listed as August 23, 2023, which suggests that the company did not take immediate action since they only learned of the intrusion eight months after the incident.
According to the notice filed with Maine, hackers obtained financial information, including bank account and credit card numbers, along with associated security codes, passwords, or secrets.
In response to this breach, National Amusements has stated that customers whose social security numbers were compromised will receive 12 months of credit monitoring and identity theft services from Experian.
In a filing submitted to the Massachusetts attorney general earlier this year, Paramount disclosed a security breach in August. The breach resulted in the theft of personal information belonging to an unknown number of customers, such as their names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, or other government-issued identification numbers. The two incidents seem to be different.
