Logitech Wave Keys keyboard
I’ve never used an ergonomic keyboard before – but this Logitech release has changed my mind for good

[ad_1]

As a technology journalist, I type a lot. That might come as a shock to some of you, but it’s true – and so when it comes to how I type, I’m pretty particular about the hardware I use.

At my home office, for a long time I used a Windows-optimized Logitech office keyboard that I had engineered for just the right amount of angle and comfort, alongside an Ikea wrist rest that offered a fair amount of cushioning and comfort.

Samsung: Samsung brings Phone app to Windows to offer Apple ecosystem-like continuity support

[ad_1]

Samsung has been pushing the entire Galaxy ecosystem hard to offer a seamless integration between its devices and services it offers across all the devices. The company already has a pretty functional ecosystem features where the Galaxy Book keyboard and trackpad can be used for Galaxy smartphones and tablets, the Galaxy tablets can be used as the second screen, the Galaxy Buds can connect and switch between devices to the Galaxy devices that are linked to the same Samsung account.
Now, the company is taking a step forward towards making calls seamless across its Galaxy devices with its new Samsung Phone app. It appears like an extension of the “Allow phone calls on other devices” feature.
SamsungPhone app comes to PC
The SamsungPhone app is now available on the Microsoft Store. And, Samsung users can now download the app and link their Samsung Phone with it to be able to manage calls right from their Windows PCs.
Microsoft Store’s listing for the SamsungPhone app mentions that the app is compatible with Galaxy Book4 along with other Intel-powered laptops later. Now, this does not exactly clarify whether the app will work with non-Galaxy Book devices or not. However, it would be great if it does, which will give users access to the app who use a Samsung smartphone and a laptop from other brands. Also, the app is available for Windows 10 version 17763 or higher.
As of now, the app will only work with Galaxy Book4 laptops which means users will have to wait to get their hands on the upcoming Galaxy Boo4 laptops.
Meanwhile, Samsung is expected to globally launch the Galaxy Book4 series at the upcoming event next year. The company has already revealed the key details about the upcoming PC lineup which includes the latest generation Intel Core Ultra processors paired with Nvidia RTX 4070 GPU.

Explained: Why the Apple Watch has been banned, what it means for buyers, Apple, and more
Explained: Why the Apple Watch has been banned, what it means for buyers, Apple, and more

[ad_1]

The US International Trade Commission has banned certain Apple Watch models following a complaint by Masimo. The Watch’s blood-oxygen measuring feature infringes on Masimo‘s patents, leading to an import ban on models using the disputed technology. President Biden had 60 days to veto the order but chose not to do so, thus the ban has now gone into effect.
Why the Apple Watch has been banned
In 2020, Masimo accused Apple of stealing trade secrets patent infringement, requesting a ban on the sale of Apple Watches in the US. A year later, Masimo accused Apple of patent infringement.
During the launch of the Watch Series 6, Apple was accused of infringing on 10 pulse oximeter patents by a company. These accusations followed Apple’s attempt to partner with Masimo, a company that supplies its technology to many hospital equipment.
Masimo’s CEO claimed that Apple had ulterior motives as it wanted to poach its employees. Later that year, Apple recruited several employees from Masimo, including the chief medical officer, who had access to confidential information and trade secrets belonging to Masimo.
In January of this year, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) found that Apple violated one of Masimo’s patents related to light-based pulse oximetry. However, the commission did not find Apple guilty of infringing on the other nine patents. The commission upheld the judge’s ruling from January, which found that Apple violated Masimo’s patent rights in relation to light-based technology used for reading blood oxygen levels.
What Apple Watch models have been banned?
The ITC ruling applies only to Apple Watches with the light-based pulse oximetry feature in question but does not specify which affected models. Masimo claims that all Apple Watches with pulse oximetry, which was introduced first on the Watch Series 6, have infringed on their patents. However, as of now Apple has only paused the sales of Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 models.
How does the Apple Watch ban affect the customers?
Customers will not be able to purchase the Apple Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 from the Apple Store. However, these two models are available for purchase from third-party retail stores, such as Best Buy, Walmart, Target and others, while supplies last.
The Apple Watch SE 2 is unaffected and will continue to be available at Apple Store and other retail stores since it does not have the pulse oximetry feature.
Apple has also said that it will not replace out-of-warranty watches older than the Series 6. However, under-warranty watches can be replaced and serviced.
What actions is Apple taking against the ban?
Apple has submitted an appeal to the International Trade Commission’s ruling that prohibits the sale of Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 models in the United States. The company has also requested an emergency stay on the ban for at least two weeks until a decision is made on redesigned versions of the banned models.
Apple is also said to be working on software modifications that would allow its watches to operate without infringing Masimo’s patents. If the workaround is approved by US Customs and Border Protection, the company could resume importing and selling the banned Watch models. However, Masimo has stated that a software workaround would not work since its patent covers hardware.
If nothing works around, then Apple could choose to settle with Masimo. Joe Kiani, the CEO of Masimo, has expressed a willingness to resolve the dispute through a settlement.

WhatsApp Working on a Revamped Dark Interface, Sidebar for Web Users: Report

[ad_1]

WhatsApp started rolling out dark mode for its Web version back in 2020. Now, the instant messaging platform is reportedly gearing up to introduce a new colour scheme and a redesigned sidebar for the dark theme. The new interface is expected to be beneficial for users of WhatsApp Web in low-light conditions. It is expected to reduce the strain on the eyes. However, WhatsApp has not yet officially confirmed the development of a new interface and it is not available to beta testers yet.

As per a report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is testing a new background colour for its Web version’s dark theme along with a new tweaked sidebar. The new design and colour upgrades are expected to reduce eye strain in low-light environments. The sidebar could offer an improved messaging experience.

The new interface is not available for testers yet but is expected to be released in a future update of the WhatsApp Web. However, the publication has included a preview of the rumoured colour scheme for the dark theme. The colour scheme update is visible across the top bar, background, and message bubbles.

Meta has introduced several new features to its instant messaging platform lately. Earlier this month, the social media company announced Pinned Messages that allow users to highlight a specific message in any ongoing one-on-one and group conversation and pin it to the top of that chat for up to 30 days. Further, WhatsApp introduced the View Once option for voice messages. This lets users send a voice message that will disappear once the recipient listens to it.

WhatsApp could soon allow users to post status updates from the Web version or linked ‘companion’ devices. It is also reportedly working on a new feature that will let users share HD images and videos in their status updates.

Dell: Dell: We further modernised the Alienware and G-series gaming portfolios in the year 2023

[ad_1]

The year 2023 has been a significant year for the PC market globally as well as in India, marked by advancements in technology, design, and accessibility. Personal technology major Dell Technologies witnessed largely a sustained level of demand in India even as demand for Personal Computers (PCs) slumped globally. During the third quarter of the year 2023, Dell stood at No.3 position, holding market share of 14.6%.
Talking about the company’s performance during the year, Raj Kumar Rishi, Vice President and Managing Director, Consumer and Small Business, Dell Technologies, India, said, “Using technology to propel human progress has been our objective, and we have stayed ahead of the curve in doing it.”
The year 2023 saw PC brands launch sleek and stylish form factors with focus on mobility. On its part, Dell revamped its Alienware and G-series gaming lines with enhanced design language and powerful upgrades. The focus on aesthetics extended beyond gaming, with XPS and Inspiron laptops offering a variety of configurations. Over the last few years, gaming has transcended its niche status to become a mainstream phenomenon in India. The increasing availability of powerful hardware and a thriving national community have broken down gender barriers, making gaming a viable career path for many. This one can also say is the result of democratisation of technology and its potential to empower individuals from all walks of life.
“Offering a range of form factors, upgrades to the overall design language, and noteworthy software updates, we modernised the Alienware and G-series gaming portfolios. To address the changing demands of creators and learners, we launched a broad selection of devices under the XPS and Inspiron brands. The most significant thing is that we increased our efforts to create an omnichannel presence throughout the nation by adding two new gaming stores in Delhi and Kolkata and growing the number of Dell Exclusive Stores to over 600 across the country. To give all of our consumers a simple shopping experience, we also worked closely with our channel partners. As a consequence, Dell was awarded India’s most coveted brand for three consecutive years,” added Rishi.
Looking ahead to exciting times
As we stand on the cusp of another year, 2024, the PC market’s evolution promises to be even more exciting, fueled by advancements in AI, virtual reality, and other cutting-edge technologies. “As we begin a new year, our top priority will remain providing excellent products and enabling exceptional experiences for our customers. We’re also excited about the opportunity presented by emerging technologies to transform the PC industry, and we’ll keep looking for ways to bring value to all users,” said Rishi.

The White House refuses to reverse the Apple Watch ban, so Apple is appealing

[ad_1]

The Apple Watch ban is now in full force after the Biden administration chose not to intervene and reverse the decision to stop sales – and Apple has said it will now appeal a decision that it “strongly disagrees” with.

To recap: Apple has been told to halt sales of the Apple Watch 9 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 in the US, over a sensor patent dispute with a company called Masimo. You can no longer buy these products direct from Apple, and as imports into the US have been stopped too, they’ll soon be disappearing from third-party retailers too.

India issues advisory to combat deepfakes and protect users; Know all about it
India issues advisory to combat deepfakes and protect users; Know all about it

[ad_1]

Deepfakes have become a rising concern lately, with several eminent personalities including celebrities falling victim. There have been several instances where threat actors have even defrauded the victim by using deepfakes or fake voices. While the advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have increased productivity and helped users in their day-to-day lives, the technology has also been misused to carry out such scams and identity theft. After holding dialogues with tech and social media companies, the Government of India has now issued an advisory to the platforms. Know all about it.

Govt advisory against deepfakes

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued an advisory to all intermediaries, notably concerning the rising number of deepfakes. For the unaware, deepfakes are AI-generated videos, images, and audio that are edited or manipulated to make anyone say or do anything that they did not do in real life.

The Indian govt’s advisory is aimed at ensuring that social media platforms comply with the existing IT rules. It states that all intermediaries must communicate prohibited content, particularly those specified under Rule 3(1)(b) of the IT Rules, ‘clearly and precisely’ to users. This should be done via the terms of service and user agreements. Moreover, users should be made aware of it during the time of first registration, and at regular intervals, such as after every login.

Union Minister of State for Electronics and Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar said, “Today, a formal advisory has been issued incorporating the ‘agreed to’ procedures to ensure that users on these platforms do not violate the prohibited content in Rule 3(1)(b) and if such legal violations are noted or reported then the consequences under law will follow. MeitY will closely observe the compliance of intermediaries in the coming weeks and follow this up with further amendments to the IT Rules and/or the law if and when required.”

Past instances

There have been several instances where deepfakes came to light. A deepfake involving actress Rashmika Mandanna surfaced on social media a while ago, whereas other celebrities such as Priyanka Chopra, Alia Bhatt, and Kajol have fallen prey. Notably, there have also been fake AI-generated audio clips of Prime Minister Narendra Modi surfaced online.
