Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has once again criticised media outlets. This time it is because of their coverage of a robot-related incident at a Tesla factory in Austin, Texas. The incident, which occurred in 2021, involved a worker being injured by an industrial robot arm, not one of Tesla’s developing humanoid “Optimus” robots.
Musk took to Twitter on Wednesday, taking aim at a Daily Mail article and calling the media’s reporting “truly shameful.” He accused them of “dredging up an injury from two years ago” and falsely implying the incident involved his advanced Optimus robots, which are still under development. He clarified that the injured worker was interacting with a “simple industrial Kuka robot arm,” commonly found in factories worldwide.
“Truly shameful of the media to dredge up an injury from two years ago due to a simple industrial Kuka robot arm (found in all factories) and imply that it is due to Optimus now,” said Musk in a reply to a user’s post on X. The user had shared a screenshot of an article by The Daily Mail which had a rather dramatic headline — “Tesla robot ATTACKS an engineer at company’s Texas factory during violent malfunction – leaving ‘trail of blood’ and forcing workers to hit emergency shutdown button.”
The story was also reported by The Information. As per the report by the Information, an engineer who was working on software updates on the robots at the Tesla factory. Two witnesses said that one of the robots grabbed the engineer and pinned against the surface. The engineer, as per the report, was bleeding as the robot’s claws had injured him. The report also mentioned that the engineer escaped the robot only after another worked had pressed the emergency stop button.

Alibaba has been facing multiple lawsuits in the US for allowing merchants to sell fake products on its platforms. One such lawsuit alleges that various merchants have been selling counterfeit versions of the popular children’s toy Squishmallows on its online platforms. The Chinese tech major also appealed to dismiss this lawsuit which has been recently dismissed by a US judge.
According to a report by the news agency Reuters, Manhattan’s US District Judge Jesse Furman has said that Kelly Toys, whose parent Jazwares is owned by billionaire Warren Buffett‘s Berkshire Hathaway, has alleged that Alibaba knew about and helped the merchants to infringe on its copyrights and trademarks.
Kelly Toys claims that it has filed six earlier lawsuits to stop the sale of counterfeit products on Alibaba. However, it persisted on the platform and the company has been ignoring its own “three-strike” policies and has even awarded some infringing merchants “Gold Supplier” and “Verified” status.
What Alibaba said about the lawsuit
Alibaba and lawyers for the Chinese e-commerce company haven’t shared an official comment after its plea to dismiss the lawsuit got rejected. However, while seeking a dismissal Alibaba said Kelly Toys has failed to allege its involvement in infringements. The e-tailer also noted that the toy maker was trying to improperly shift the burden of policing its intellectual property by requiring “draconian” measures against sellers.

In November 2022, Kelly Toys sued about 90 merchants. The company accused them of selling counterfeit Squishmallows and two months later obtained an injunction. In March, the company added Alibaba as a defendant.
In April 2020, Jazwares bought a majority stake in Kelly Toys. Later on, in October 2022, Berkshire bought Jazwares’ parent, the insurance holding company Alleghany. Jazwares generated a revenue of $847 million in the first nine months of 2023.

The central government has directed all social media companies and online platforms to not carry advertisements of fraudulent loan apps. IT minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar has said that these illegal loan apps are misleading, and exploit people who are using the internet.
“One of the areas we are now cracking down on is advertising of fraudulent loan apps that many platforms are carrying and we have made it clear that no intermediary can carry advertisements of fraudulent loan apps because it will be misleading and exploits people who are using the internet,” the minister said noting an advisory issued earlier this week.
Several reports this year suggest that people have fallen prey to several fake instant loan apps, which lend small amounts to those in need at exorbitantly high-interest rates. People have complained of being harassed and blackmailed for not paying back the amount. The apps also demand personal information and multiple types of ‘hidden charges’ from users.
What the IT ministry’s advisory said
In the advisory, the IT Ministry directed that “intermediaries and platforms should take additional measures to not permit any advertisements of illegal loan and betting apps having the potential to scam and mislead the users, the consequences of which will be the sole responsibility of the intermediaries and platforms”.
The advisory also stressed the importance of robust grievance redressal mechanisms employed by intermediaries.
Earlier this month, the government informed the Parliament that Google had suspended or removed over 2,500 fraudulent loan apps from its Play Store between April 2021 and July 2022. It reviewed approximately 3,500 to 4,000 loan lending apps.
Recently, the government also issued an advisory on deepfakes targeting the growing concerns around misinformation powered by AI tools. It asked all intermediaries to ensure compliance with the existing IT rules.

Apple’s iPhone seems to have shipped with some unknown hardware features which were then uncovered by hackers who found a way to exploit them in highly destructive zero-click attacks. 

A new report from Kaspersky has outlined how roughly five years ago, it discovered a unique spyware targeting iPhone devices. They named the campaign “Operation Triangulation”, and after reverse-engineering the spyware and breaking down the campaign, Kaspersky found that the attackers chained four vulnerabilities to mount zero-click attacks.

OnePlus Ace 3 will go official in China next week alongside the OnePlus Buds 3 TWS earphones. Ahead of it, the Chinese tech brand has released multiple teasers, disclosing the display specifications of the smartphone. The OnePlus Ace 3 is confirmed to come with an OLED panel with 1.5K resolution. The company has used the same panel supplied by BOE in the OnePlus 12. The OnePlus Ace 3 is expected to run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC.

OnePlus has confirmed the display specifications of the OnePlus Ace 3 via Weibo. As per the teaser posts, the upcoming handset will have a 6.78-inch BOE Oriental screen with 1.5K (2,780 x 1,264 pixels) resolution, up to 4,500 nits of peak brightness and 800 nits of manual brightness. The display is rated to deliver 1,600 nits brightness in auto mode. The panel claimed to have received an A+ rating from DisplayMate. This is in line with a leak from last week. OnePlus has packed a similar OLED panel in the OnePlus 12 with 2K resolution.

The handset is confirmed to have a metal frame and a frosted glass panel on the back. It will have an in-screen fingerprint scanner for authentication. In global markets including India, the OnePlus Ace 3 is expected to arrive as the OnePlus 12R at the company’s ‘Smooth Beyond Belief’ event in New Delhi on January 23.

OnePlus Ace 3 will launch in China on January 4 at 2:30pm local time (12:00pm IST). It is confirmed to come in black, blue, and gold colour options. The OnePlus Buds 3 TWS earbuds will also debut alongside.

As per past leaks, the OnePlus Ace 3 could run on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC and house a 5,500mAh battery with 100W wired fast charging support. It is anticipated to have a dual rear camera unit, comprising a 50-megapixel primary sensor with optical image stabilisation (OIS) support and an 8-megapixel sensor with an ultra-wide-angle lens. It could feature a 16-megapixel selfie sensor.

Tecno Pop 8 recently launched globally with a Unisoc T606 SoC and a 5,000mAh battery with 10W wired fast charging support. The phone was recently teased to be available in India. Now, the company has announced the launch date of the phone in the country. The availability details of the handset in India have also been confirmed. Tecno has revealed some key features of the upcoming smartphone including design, colour options, display specifications, AnTuTu score and RAM and storage configurations as well. 

In a press note, Tecno confirmed that the Tecno Pop 8 will launch in India on January 3. The phone is also confirmed to be available in India via Amazon. A microsite for the handset is live on the e-commerce website. The entry-level smartphone is said to have an AnTuTu score of 240K and Tecno claims it to be the fastest 8GB model in the segment.

The company confirms that the 8GB RAM on the Indian variant of the Tecno Pop 8 includes 4GB of physical RAM and 4GB of virtual RAM. The phone will come with an onboard storage of 64GB. It is also confirmed to sport a 90Hz Dot-In display with a Dynamic Port which is a feature similar to Apple’s Dynamic Port that shows notifications and other alerts. In India, the phone is set to launch in Gravity Black and Mystery White colour options.

The global variant of the Tecno Pop 8 ships with Android T-Go and has a 6.6-inch HD+ (720 x 1,612 pixels) LCD panel with a 90Hz refresh rate. It is powered by an octa-core Unisoc T606 chipset paired with up to 4GB of RAM and up to 128GB of inbuilt storage. 

For optics, the Tecno Pop 8 carries a 13-megapixel dual rear camera unit alongside an LED flash. There’s an 8-megapixel sensor in the front for selfies and video calls. The phone packs a 5,000mAh battery with 10W wired charging support that is claimed to offer over 900 hours of standby time on a single charge.

In October of this year, some journalists and opposition leaders in India reported receiving a threat notification from Apple on their iPhones. After these individuals posted about the notification, the government launched an investigation. Apple executives were summoned to be questioned about the security of its devices, but instead of asking about security, the government insisted that Apple soften its message, reports the Washington Post.
The Minister of Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, said at the time that the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) had launched an investigation.As a part of the investigation, the government has sent a notice to Apple requesting the company to send representatives for a meeting with government officials.
During the investigation, executives from Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino were summoned to be questioned about the security of the company’s devices. However, instead of focusing on device security, the government reportedly asked Apple to modify its public statements. According to three individuals familiar with the situation, the government asked that Apple soften its message.
The notification read, “State-sponsored attackers may be targeting your iPhone.” Apple noted that “it’s possible that some Apple threat notifications may be false alarms.
The threat notification alerts are sent to users “because of who they are or what they do.” Individuals such as political leaders, journalists, and activists are the target crowd of these alerts to inform and assist users whom state-sponsored attackers may have targeted.
The government even brought in an Apple security expert from outside the country and asked them to find alternative explanations for the warnings given to users, according to the report.
Following reports of state-sponsored attacks on certain individuals, Apple released a public statement. In the statement, the company acknowledged that the “intelligence signals” are often imperfect and incomplete” Therefore, it is possible that some Apple threat notifications may be “false alarms.” Apple did not provide specific details in the notifications, as the company stated that it cannot disclose what triggers its threat notifications, and doing so may help state-sponsored attackers avoid getting detected in the future.
According to Apple, the company did not identify “any specific state-sponsored attacker” responsible for these threat notifications.
