Apple has announced that it will open up its repair process to allow independent repair providers and customers to install genuine used iPhone parts to fix their own smartphones. The company offers a self-repair program in several regions which will let customers use older components for repairs. The process of ordering repair parts will also be simplified by the smartphone maker. Meanwhile. Apple has announced that its Activation Lock feature for iPhone will also be extended to the smartphone’s individual components to deter the use of stolen iPhone parts for repairs.

The company stated in a press release on Thursday that a new process of “calibrating” parts on an iPhone would allow both customers and independent repair providers relying on Apple’s self-repair program, that is available in over 30 countries, to repurpose genuine used parts on their iPhone. This will arrive for users later this year, and “select iPhone models” will be supported, according to the company.

Once a genuine part from another device is installed on a customer’s iPhone, Apple says that the calibration will happen on the device adding that these components can “benefit from the full functionality and security afforded by the original factory calibration, just like new genuine Apple parts”. Apple says that future iPhone models will also allow customers to replace components like the biometric sensors used for Face ID and Touch ID.

Apple is also standing by its decision to tie its devices to individual components or the “pairing” process that involves confirming whether a part is genuine. The company says this process is “critical to preserving the privacy, security, and safety” of its smartphones. The Activation Lock feature that prevents the use of a stolen iPhone will soon be extended to its components, and Apple claims this will deter thieves from taking a stolen iPhone apart to access individual components for repairs.

The iPhone maker has also announced that customers will be able to order parts from the Self Service Repair store without providing a device’s serial number. Meanwhile, customers will be able to access the Parts and Service history section in the iOS Settings app to see details of whether new or genuine used parts were used to repair their device — this improvement will be added later this year, according to the company.

Adobe Reportedly Paying for Videos to Train a New Text-to-Video AI Model

Adobe is reportedly working on building an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered text-to-video generation model. To train its AI model, the company is said to be purchasing videos from photographers and artists. This data will be used in addition to the platform’s existing library of stock images and videos. Interestingly, the software giant is paying an average of $2.62 (roughly Rs. 220) for every minute of submitted videos. Notably, earlier this year, Adobe unveiled its Project Music GenAI Control, an AI music-generation tool which is still under development.

According to a report by Bloomberg, the company has offered its network of photographers and artists as much as $120 (roughly Rs. 10,000) to submit videos, which will then be used to train its AI video model. On the basis of documents seen by the publication, it added that the company has requested videos of “people engaged in everyday actions such as walking or expressing emotions including joy and anger”. It appears Adobe might use this data to train human expressions and natural motion through these procured videos.

Further, the report highlighted that the software giant has requested as many as 100 short clips of people expressing emotions and shots of human anatomy such as feet, hands, or eyes. It also has asked for videos where people are “interacting with objects” such as smartphones and gym equipment.

The documents seen by the publication also warn the collaborators to not submit copyrighted material, nudity or any other offensive content. The payout for this task on average is $2.62 but the report states that some submitters could also be paid as high as $7.25 (roughly Rs. 600) for a minute of submitted video.

The development also highlights the increased costs companies are now incurring for procuring data to train their AI model as the publicly available data sources are being used up. While some tech companies have resorted to ethically procuring the data, others have been accused of stealing copyrighted data from social media platforms. A recent report claimed that OpenAI used more than a million hours of transcribed data from YouTube videos to train GPT-4.

Android 15 Beta 1 Released With New Security and Privacy Features for Eligible Google Pixel Phones

Android 15 Beta 1 is now available to download on eligible Google Pixel smartphones for users and developers who want to try out the upcoming version of Android. Google’s next mobile operating system (OS) update is expected to bring new features and functionality, when it is released later this year. While the search giant is expected to unveil new Android 15 features at Google I/O in May, the first beta version gives us a look at new privacy and security features coming to the OS later this year.

According to details shared by Google on the Android Beta subreddit on Thursday, the first beta release of Android 15 is now available to download on the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet. Users who installed the developer preview will automatically get an update to Android 15 Beta 1, just like users who have Android 14 QPR3 beta on their devices.

 

In its post on Reddit, the company said that it would have more details to share at its annual developer conference next month, but 9to5Google has already unearthed new features that were added since the last Android 15 developer preview. After installing Android 15 Beta 1, users will see a new section called Cellular network security under Settings > Security & privacy > More security & privacy called that allows users to require encryption when connecting to cellular networks, or receive notifications when connecting to insecure networks.

Meanwhile, a new Send device name toggle has appeared under the Privacy menu found in each Wi-Fi network details section. It appears under the MAC address randomisation setting and the description suggests that disabling the feature will stop sharing the phone’s name with the Wi-Fi network.

Two more additions appear to have been made on Android 15 Beta 1. Users can set a default wallet app (eg. Samsung Wallet or Google Wallet) under the Default apps section. Meanwhile, Pixel phone users who update to Android 15 Beta 1 will also gain access to new Pixel Weather widgets that can be added to the home screen.

While Android 15 Beta 1 is likely to be more stable than the developer previews that were previously released by the company, it is advisable to install pre-release software on secondary devices and not your ‘daily driver’ phone. It’s also worth checking Google’s official Android 15 Beta 1 release notes to see what bugs have been fixed and all known issues before installing the latest beta version on your Pixel phone.

OpenAI upgraded its artificial intelligence (AI) model GPT-4 Turbo with new capabilities on Friday, especially in the areas of mathematics, reasoning, and writing abilities. The upgraded version of GPT-4 Turbo is now being rolled out to the paid users of ChatGPT Plus, Team, Enterprise, and the API. The new AI model also comes with an updated data library and now touts a knowledge cut-off of April 2024. Notably, the update comes just days after the AI firm announced its new GPT-4 Turbo with Vision model in API.

The announcement was made by the official X (formerly known as Twitter) account of OpenAI via a post, where it stated, “Our new GPT-4 Turbo is now available to paid ChatGPT users. We’ve improved capabilities in writing, math, logical reasoning, and coding.” One of the areas where users will be able to see a direct improvement is its conversational language. The company said when writing with ChatGPT, responses will be more direct and less verbose.

This was a complaint we had with ChatGPT when we compared it with Google’s Gemini. We found the latter to be more conversational and generating content such as a letter, an email, or a message felt more natural. In contrast, the responses of ChatGPT (we tested it on GPT-3.5, which is available publicly) felt overly formal and bland. It appears this is now being fixed with the recent update.

OpenAI also highlighted that the new model will offer better math, reasoning, and coding capabilities, however, it did not share any examples of the improvements. Going by the benchmark scores posted by the firm show significant improvement in the MATH and GPQA (Graduate-Level Google-Proof Q&A) benchmarks. HumanEval and MMLU (Massive Multitask Language Understanding) benchmarks, which correspond with coding and natural language processing abilities, did not show any major improvements.

Users will also see an updated knowledge base in the new GPT-4 Turbo model. The company has increased the data cut-off to April 9, 2024, whereas the older Turbo model was updated only till April 2023. Currently, the new AI model is being rolled out to all the paid users of ChatGPT.

The company has officially teased the Motorola Edge 50 series via an X post. As per the post, Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 SoC will power an Edge series handset. While Motorola didn’t reveal the exact moniker of the handset, it is quite clear that the Ultra variant will carry this SoC. Past leaks and a recent Geekbench benchmark listing have also indicated that the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra runs on the same Snapdragon 8 series chipset.

Motorola Edge 50 Ultra surfaced on Geekbench earlier this week with an impressive single-core CPU score of 1,947 and a multi-core score of 5,149. The listing showed a high-performance core with a maximum clock speed of 3.01GHz, four cores capped at 2.80GHz and three cores capped at 2.02GHz. These CPU speeds are associated with the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 SoC. The listing suggested 12GB of RAM and Android 14 operating system on the device.

As per past leaks, the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra will carry a triple rear camera setup comprising a 50-megapixel primary sensor. The handset is said to carry a 6.7-inch OLED display with 165Hz refresh rate.

Motorola Edge 50 Ultra is anticipated to be the most premium handset in the upcoming Edge 50 series. It could debut in the US with Motorola Edge+ 2024 or Edge Ultra 2024 moniker and cost around $999 (roughly Rs. 83,000).

Despite being the most advanced technology developed by the company, GPT-4 Turbo does come with certain limitations.

Limitations and Scope

OpenAI clarifies that the model may struggle with correctly analysing medical images such as CT scans, images containing non-English or small texts, graphs, stylised texts, panoramic or fisheye images, and more. Moreover, the system is not intended for handling CAPTCHAs. Users are permitted to upload image files in PNG (.png), JPEG (.jpeg and .jpg), WEBP (.webp), and non-animated GIF (.gif) formats, with a size restriction of 20MB per image.

“We will automatically delete the image after it has been processed by the model,” OpenAI assures. In addition to its image processing capabilities, GPT-4 Turbo also offers functionalities like website creation from scratch, coding assistance, and more. Access to GPT-4 Turbo is granted to ChatGPT Plus users, with subscription prices starting from $20 per month (approximately Rs. 1660) in India.
