Apple makes it easier and cheaper to repair your iPhone- All details
Apple makes it easier and cheaper to repair your iPhone- All details

[ad_1]

After introducing Self Service Repair for iPhones a few years ago, Apple has now announced support for used genuine parts. Up until a few years ago, getting an iPhone repaired proved to be a headache, especially for those who did not live near an Apple repair centre. Unlike other companies, the iPhone maker did not allow self-repair, with only Apple experts authorised to do it. That changed in 2022 when it announced its Self Service Repair program, enabling iPhone users to carry out repairs on their devices using Apple-supplied parts and repair kits. The program seems to have now been expanded to include genuine used parts.

Apple extends support for used genuine parts

The iPhone maker says this initiative will enable users to carry out repairs of their iPhones with the help of used genuine parts. This could potentially take down the cost of repairs. To ensure the privacy, security, and safety of the users as well as the device, a process called ‘Pairing’ will take place after the used part is installed. It will confirm whether the installed part is genuine and gather information about it.

Thus, users will no longer have to provide the serial number of their iPhone when ordering parts from Apple’s Self Repair Service store. This will be valid on repairs not related to the logic board.

Announcing this move, John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering said, “For the last two years, teams across Apple have been innovating on product design and manufacturing to support repairs with used Apple parts that won’t compromise users’ safety, security, or privacy. With this latest expansion to our repair program, we’re excited to be adding even more choice and convenience for our customers, while helping to extend the life of our products and their parts.”

The program will include select iPhones and will begin this Fall, Apple has announced. Along with this, Apple is also extending its Activation Lock feature to iPhone parts in order to deter stolen iPhones from being disassembled for parts.

Instagram takes one big step to prevent users from falling for scams related to adult content
Instagram takes one big step to prevent users from falling for scams related to adult content

[ad_1]

Over the past few years, the Meta platform was bashed by many concerned parents about child safety. Now, to take action and protect its teenage user base, Meta is testing a nudity protection feature for Instagram’s messages which detects and blurs the nude images which are being shared by other users. This feature will keep users safe from potential scams and harmful content which appears on Instagram. This move came after serious pressure from the US and European governments. Know more about how the nudity protection feature on Instagram will work.

Instagram nudity protection feature for DMs

Meta is backing teens from sextortion and intimate image abuse by introducing new features to Instagram. Sextortion is a new emerging scam which involves sexual blackmail, threats, sharing adult images and others. According to the Meta blog, the upcoming feature will make it challenging for scammers and criminals to interact with and manipulate teen users. Additionally, the company is also working on new measures to support youngsters in recognising scammers and how they can protect themselves. Currently, Instagram is testing nudity protection in DMs which will strictly blur the image if detected containing nude content. This feature uses on-device machine learning to detect and analyse images sent in a DM on Instagram.

Meta highlighted that once this feature is fully ready, it will be turned on by default for users under the age of 18. For adults, a notification will pop up which will encourage users to use the feature for their safety and protection. Meta said, “Because the images are analysed on the device itself, nudity protection will also work in end-to-end encrypted chats, where Meta won’t have access to these images – unless someone chooses to report them to us.” This tool is expected to roll out in the coming week, making Meta platforms a safer space for teens. Meta will also provide users with tips and support such as Meta’s Safety Center, support helplines, StopNCII.org for users over 18, and “Take It Down” for users under 18.

Apple is easing up its self-repair policy, allowing iPhone owners to fix their devices with used parts instead of forcing them to buy new replacements. The tech giant told The Washington Post the update will apply to screens, batteries, and cameras among other things.

Apple states in its announcement post that they have plans to grow the program to include biometric sensors. The changes are scheduled to take effect this autumn, starting, Apple confirmed with TechRadar, with the iPhone 15 and future models.

AI isn’t a silver bullet – but it can get close if you consider the right AI tools

[ad_1]

AI and the way it shapes our society has come a long way from the early days in Alan Turing’s labs, from totally replacing smartphone apps to generating incredible new images in under two seconds. It’s no wonder then that many businesses are bought into and benefitting from AI-based tools and platforms. In fact, a recent IDC report found that 71% of businesses are already using AI while 22% plan to in the next 12 months.

However, to truly realize the benefits of AI, businesses need to carefully consider how much they are reliant on humans to assess the output of AI tools and solutions, and if this is actually enabling them to gain business value or make a meaningful difference. From this will come the opportunity to explore exactly how human beings and technology working in tandem is the answer to unlocking real AI implementation value.

So why aren’t businesses seeing gains from AI?

The inevitable risks and best defense for cloud cybersecurity

[ad_1]

Most businesses, regardless of size, now understand the potential value of the cloud. We’re beyond that stage of early skepticism in which technology decision-makers questioned whether cloud services would factor significantly into corporate operations. Wholesale adoption is now underway and has been for years.

And why not? The benefits of the cloud are obvious. The ability to access cloud-hosted applications and services from anywhere, store and recall data and content without regard to physical data center limitations such as capacity and aging hardware, and grow or shrink infrastructure elastically to meet the changing needs of your business is invaluable. As a complementary part of your overall IT strategy, the cloud can definitely accelerate your corporate growth and help achieve your goals and desired business outcomes.

Acclaimed survival-horror sequel Alan Wake 2, Nintendo platformer Super Mario Bros. Wonder and British indie Viewfinder won two BAFTAs each, while Cyberpunk 2077 continued its redemption story with a win in the Evolving Game category.

The prestigious British Academy Game Awards announced its winners in a ceremony at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London on Thursday night. In addition to the Best Game award, Baldur’s Gate 3 won in the categories of Music, Narrative, and Performer in a Supporting Role for Andrew Wincott, who plays Raphael in the game. Dave the Diver, a pixel-art style game about catching fish and serving sushi, did win in the Game Design category, however.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, two acclaimed games from last year that were in the running for several year-end game of the year honours during the awards season, won for Technical Achievement and Performer in a Leading Role (for Nadji Jeter as Miles Morales), respectively. Apple steps up Safari’s game with 60% faster performance according to shiny new browser benchmark Speedometer 3.0

[ad_1]

Safari users are in for some good news, as Apple claims that users of its web browser can expect significantly better performance from the browser and its WebKit browser engine (which is primarily used in Safari).

The news was shared by Apple in an official WebKit blog post, following its announcement of Speedometer 3.0, the latest iteration of Apple’s browser benchmark made in collaboration with other browser engine developers. It explains that the introduction of Speedometer 3.0 will usher in an era of faster web use in general, allowing web developers to make web apps and websites unlike those seen before, and Apple itself will be making sure that Safari and WebKit take advantage of the new technology.

According to 9to5Mac, the way that Speedometer 3.0 captures information and calculates scores will allow for more detailed findings and give web developers new capabilities.
