Battery leak reveals more about Samsung’s new XR headset

[ad_1]

If you watched Samsung Unpacked 2023 earlier this week, you’ll know that the company announced a new initiative in the field of Extended Reality, or XR. What we didn’t get were any details of an actual physical product – which is where a new leak comes in.

As spotted by GalaxyClub (opens in new tab) (via SamMobile (opens in new tab)), a battery that has just passed through regulatory certification in South Korea matches up with a particular model number that the rumor mill associated with an upcoming Samsung device last year.

Dreamlight Valley
How Disney’s Dreamlight Valley Made Me Feel Like A Kid Again

[ad_1]

Each time I play a new video game I find myself trying to capture that feeling I had playing them when I was younger. That feeling where you find yourself staring up at the screen and nothing else around you matters.

After years of trying to recapture that magic, I finally found it when I picked up Disney’s Dreamlight Valley (opens in new tab).

Growing up, I was an only child who lived with a single parent who worked full-time, this made me very familiar with feeling lonely. I often found myself looking to the media around me for some form of comfort and as it was the 1990s, that media had something to do with Disney. Disney was everywhere at the time, from the Saturday morning cartoons I watched, the clothes I’d wear, the film’s I’d go see in the cinema, and the video games I played.

One of my earliest gaming memories is of playing Capcom’s Aladdin on the SNES (opens in new tab). The film the game was adapted from was the first movie I ever saw in a cinema. I was obsessed, down to the Genie backpack I’d proudly take to school every day.

The company behind DeepTomCruise is bringing its de-aging tech to Hollywood

[ad_1]

You may or may not have heard of DeepTomCruise (opens in new tab), but TikTok sure has. At the time of writing, the Metaphysic-owned parody account – which sees actor Miles Fisher digitally altered into none other than Tom Cruise himself – has attracted 5 million followers to rank among the social media platform’s biggest viral hits.

DeepTomCruise uses controversial deepfake technology to capture a virtual likeness of the Top Gun: Maverick star doing decidedly un-Cruise like things, and the same visual sorcery was employed to bring Elvis back to life during last year’s edition of America’s Got Talent.

50 government websites hacked, 8 data breaches in 2022, says IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

[ad_1]

At a time when institutions are seeing an increased cyber attacks globally, IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said that around 50 government websites have been hacked and there were eight data breaches in 2022-23.
Union minister of communication, electronics and information technology Ashwini Vaishnaw told Rajya Sabha that in comparison with 2022-23, there were 59 government sites that were compromised in 2020 and 42 were targeted in 2021. Both years saw six and seven events of data breach, respectively.
Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has further informed it has detected and prevented 2,83,581, 4,32,057, 3,24,620 malicious scams during the years 2020, 2021 and 2022 respectively,” the minister said.

Hacking attempts from both India, other countries
He added that attempts of cyberattacks were made both from within the nation and internationally. The IT minister, however, did not name the websites which were attacked in 2022-23.
“There have been attempts from time to time to launch cyber-attacks on Indian cyberspace from both outside and within the country. It has been observed that such attacks compromise computer systems located in different parts of the world and use masquerading techniques and hidden servers to hide the identity of actual systems from which the attacks are launched,” he added.

CERT-In to the rescue
He added that the CERT-In and other law enforcement authorities coordinated and took necessary action against such attacks.
“When a cyber event occurs, CERT-In alerts the impacted organisations and advises them on the necessary corrective action. Additionally, it continuously publishes alerts and advisories on the most recent cyberthreats, vulnerabilities, and protective measures,” he said.
Cyberattack on AIIMS
The year 2022 saw one of the biggest cyberattacks in India wherein the country’s premier institution, All India Institute Of Medical Science (AIIMS), was hit by a ransomware attack. The AIIMS server went offline for about two weeks before authorities recovered data and systems went online.

Meta is going ahead with metaverse plans despite Reality Labs losing billions
Meta is going ahead with metaverse plans despite Reality Labs losing billions

[ad_1]

Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the Facebook-parent company will launch the next-generation consumer headset “later this year” and it will feature better mixed reality (MR) technology. The development comes as Meta announced that its Reality Labs division lost $13.7 billion on virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) in 2022.
“Later this year, we’re going to launch our next-generation consumer headset, which will feature Meta Reality as well, and I expect that this is going to establish this technology as the baseline for all headsets going forward, and eventually of course for augmented reality (AR) glasses as well,” Zuckerberg said in the company’s latest earnings release.

The top executive also said that the Meta Reality ecosystem is relatively new, but it’s going to grow a lot in the next few years, adding that there are now more than 200 applications on the company’s VR devices that have made more than $1 million in revenue.
Meta’s Reality Labs lost $13.7 billion in 2022
The company said that Reality Labs, its unit that produces VR and AR hardware and software, lost $13.7 billion in operating losses in 2022. The losses are more than the $10.2 billion it lost in 2021.

Companies Meta bought in 2022
The Facebook-parent company earlier this week received the green signal from a US court to complete its purchase of virtual reality startup Within Unlimited. The deal was blocked by the US FTC alleging that with the acquisition, Meta would unlawfully monopolise the VR industry.
In January, Meta acquired Gary Sharp Innovations, a Colorado-based optics startup to help it build better VR headsets as well as AR glasses. In December, the Facebook-parent acquired Luxexcel, a company that makes 3D-printing prescription lenses for smart glasses. In June 2022, it bought BigBox VR, the maker of Population: One and in April, it completed the purchase of Downpour Interactive, the studio behind the VR game Onward.

Apple revenue down 5%, sees biggest quarterly drop in six years
Apple revenue down 5%, sees biggest quarterly drop in six years

[ad_1]

Apple announced results for its fiscal 2023 first quarter, which ended on December 31, 2022. For the quarter, Apple’s revenue stood at$117.2 billion, which was down 5 per cent year over year. Revenue from iPhone was also down as was from Mac range of devices. However, for its Services business, Apple hit an all-time record.

Relatively tough quarter for Apple

Apple CEO Tim Cook said that “as we all continue to navigate a challenging environment, we are proud to have our best lineup of products and services ever, and as always, we remain focused on the long term and are leading with our values in everything we do.” He also revealed that Apple hit a major milestone in the quarter “are excited to report that we now have more than 2 billion active devices as part of our growing installed base.”
“We set an all-time revenue record of $20.8 billion in our Services business, and in spite of a difficult macroeconomic environment and significant supply constraints, we grew total company revenue on a constant currency basis,” said Luca Maestri, Apple’s CFO. “We generated $34 billion in operating cash flow and returned over $25 billion to shareholders during the quarter while continuing to invest in our long-term growth plans.”
Revenue from came stood at $65.8 billion for the quarter, down 8% year over year. This, as per Maestri, was because of significant foreign exchange headwinds, supply constraints on iPhone 4 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, and a challenging macroeconomic environment.
“In spite of these circumstances, we set all-time iPhone revenue records in Canada, Italy, and Spain, and saw strong growth in several emerging markets, including all-time iPhone revenue records for India and Vietnam,” he added.
Mac revenue was $7.7 billion, down 29% year over year and Apple said that the decline was in line with its expectations. On the other hand, iPad revenue was $9.4 billion, up 30% year over year.
