Google may have been storing your incognito browsing data and now they’ve agreed to delete it

Bad news: Google‘s apparently been storing your Chrome incognito browsing data.

Good news. They’ve finally agreed to delete it.

In a court document filed Monday (April 1) and spotted by BGR, Google has agreed to settle a nearly four-year-old class-action suit that challenged Google’s private browsing (a.k.a. “Incognito Mode) data collection policies.

The original lawsuit claimed, “Google tracks and collects consumer browsing history and other web activity data no matter what safeguards consumers undertake to protect their data privacy…even when Google users launch a web browser with ‘private browsing mode’ activated…Google nevertheless tracks the users’ browsing data and other identifying information.”

Google didn’t entirely deny the claims, stating in 2020 that while incognito browsing mode data isn’t saved locally, “websites might be able to collect information about your browsing activity during your session.”

Now, the search giant has, in principle at least, agreed to several adjustments in its messaging, data collection, and storage practices. However, if you thought this class action lawsuit might result in a small check arriving on your doorstep, you may be disappointed. The filing states that there will be “no release of monetary claims,” though individuals retain the right to sue Google for damages.

Among the changes Google will agree to when it appears before a judge on July 30:

Deletion or remediation of all collected data
Rewrite its incognito browser disclosures
Google must add, for the next five years at least, the ability in incognito mode to block third-party cookies by default.
Google has to delete private-browsing detection bits.

While this is probably good news and a big deal (Chrome currently has over 65% browser market share), the fact that incognito browsing never meant what you thought it did might be unnerving for some users.

Now, no one is judging what you browse in incognito mode but it’s probably good guidance to stop assuming that whatever you see while browsing in that mode is not being detected or “seen” in some way by others.

It’s not that random people or Google employees are looking at your browser history, Instead, Google’s been doing what it always does, acting as a data middle-man to enable ad-targeting and some continuity in your browsing experience either by Google or through partners who use cookies to ensure that what you see on subsequent pages reflects what you were looking at on the page before.

While the filing notes that Google has already undertaken some of these changes, it’s not clear if the messaging on the incognito splash pages has changed.

At the top, it reminds you that others using the same device won’t see your browsing history and it notes that Chrome doesn’t in this mode store browser history, cookies, and form information. It also notes, however, that your activity might be visible to the sites you visit, someone in control of your account (a school or employer), and your ISP.

It’s not clear if the changes Google’s set to make will impact any of that.

As for how Google feels about all this, the settlement notes that “Google supports final approval of the settlement, but disagrees with the legal and factual characterizations contained in the Motion.”

Apple macOS users targeted with more cyberattacks via dodgy ads and websites

Hackers are targeting Apple macOS users with a range of different infostealers in an attempt to grab sensitive data and, possibly, money, experts have warned.

A new report from cybersecurity researchers at Jamf Threat Labs found hackers were using multiple different approaches to try and drop the malware.

In one campaign, they created a fake download website and fake ads for a browser called Arc and pushed them through search engines.

Targeting macOS crypto fans

“Interestingly, the malicious website cannot be accessed directly, as it returns an error,” security researchers said. “It can only be accessed through a generated sponsored link, presumably to evade detection.”

Those that end up on the site and download the program will get Atomic Stealer, a known infostealer that was initially focused on grabbing cryptocurrency wallet-related information. Since its inception, Atomic Stealer, also known as AMOS, grew to target different operating systems, and grab more information, including stored passwords and sensitive files.

In September 2023, security researchers from Malwarebytes reported on hackers tricking people with promises of software cracks, loaders, and key generators to get them to download AMOS.

A separate campaign has seen hackers offering a fake free group meeting software which, in reality, downloads a different infostealer based on Realst. In this campaign, the victims are approached either to participate in a podcast, or in a job interview, and are invited to download the video conferencing tool.

“These attacks are often focused on those in the crypto industry as such efforts can lead to large payouts for attackers,” the researchers said. “Those in the industry should be hyper-aware that it’s often easy to find public information that they are asset holders or can easily be tied to a company that puts them in this industry.”

Total solar eclipse: NASA announces coverage for April 8 event; Check safety tips, ways to watch online and more

On April 8, a solar eclipse will be visible across most of North America, varying in degree depending on location, according to NASA. Residents within the path of totality, extending from Texas to Maine, will observe a total eclipse, while those outside this band will witness a partial eclipse. To engage the public, NASA is organizing in-person events, providing opportunities to experience NASA science, and offering online streaming options.

Linux servers targeted by dangerous espionage malware as Windows threat makes the jump

A dangerous espionage malware, previously only used against Windows devices, is increasingly being observed on Linux machines, too, experts have warned.

Following earlier reports by ESET and Trend Micro, Kaspersky is now warning of the Dinodas Remote Access Trojan (RAT), signaling the rising popularity of the malware.

Kaspersky claims the backdoor is “fully functional, granting the operator complete control over the infected machine, enabling data exfiltration and espionage”. DinodasRAT is designed to monitor, control, and steal data from target endpoints. Besides stealing data, it can run processes, create a remote shell for direct command, or file execution, update and upgrade itself, uninstall itself and delete all traces of its existence.

Older reports indicate that DinodasRAT is a Linux version of a known Windows RAT dubbed XDealer. Earlier in March, Trend Micro observed the Chinese APT group known as “Earth Krahang” using XDealer against both Windows and Linux systems belonging to “governments worldwide”.

The researchers did not detail how the attackers managed to drop the malware onto target endpoints, but did stress that since October 2023, the targets were mostly located in China, Taiwan, Turkey, and Uzbekistan.

Today, many nation-states are engaged in cyber-warfare, disrupting operations and stealing sensitive data from their adversaries. Besides China, there are notable threats coming from North Korea (Lazarus Group, for example), Russia (Fancy Bear), Iran (Scarred Manticore), and others.

With war raging in Ukraine, China eyeing Taiwan, Israel engaged against Hamas, as well as other potential hotpots (the issues of migration in both Europe and the States, U.S. presidential elections), it is no wonder that not a day goes by without news of state-sponsored hacking groups engaging in cyber-espionage.

The rising popularity of DinodasRAT only demonstrates the increasing use of Linux-powered devices in government agencies around the world.

Meta Quest Pro 2: everything we know about the Apple Vision Pro competitor

Meta’s Quest 3 may be less than a year old, but Meta appears to be working on a few follow-ups. Leaks and rumors point to the existence of a Meta Quest 3 Lite – a cheaper version of the Meta Quest 3 – and a Meta Quest Pro 2 – a follow-up to the high-end Meta Quest Pro.

The original Meta Quest Pro doesn’t seem to have been all that popular – evidenced by the fact its price was permanently cut by a third less than six months after its launch – but the Apple Vision Pro seems to have fueled a renaissance of high-end standalone VR hardware. This means we’re getting a Samsung XR headset (developed in partnership with Google), and mostly likely a Meta Quest Pro 2 of some kind.

While one leak suggested the Meta Quest Pro 2 had been delayed – after Meta cancelled a project that the leak suggested was set to be the next Quest Pro – there’s more than a little evidence that the device is on the way. Here’s all of the evidence, as well as everything you need to know about the Meta Quest Pro 2 – including some of our insight, and the features we’d most like to see it get.

Meta Quest Pro 2: Price

Because the Meta Quest Pro 2 hasn’t been announced we don’t know exactly how much it’ll cost, but we expect it’ll be at least as pricey as the original which launched at $1,499.99 / £1,499.99 / AU$2,449.99.

The Meta Quest Pro was permanently discounted to $999.99 / £999.99 / AU$1729.99 five months after it launched, but we expect this was Meta attempting to give the Quest Pro a much-needed sales boost rather than an indication of the headsets actual cost. So we expect this is much cheaper than Quest Pro 2 will be.

What’s more, given that the device is expected to be more of an Apple Vision Pro competitor — which costs $3,500 or around £2,800 / AU$5,350 – with powerful specs, LG-made OLED panels, and could boast next-gen mixed reality capabilities there’s a good chance it could cost more than its predecessor.

As such we’re expecting it to come in at nearer $2,000 / £2,000 / AU$3,000. Over time, and as more leaks about the hardware come out, we should start to get a better idea of its price – though as always we won’t know for certain how much it’ll cost until Meta says something officially.

Meta Quest Pro 2: Release date

Meta hasn’t announced the Quest Pro 2 yet – or even teased it. Given its usual release schedule this means the earliest we’re likely to see a Pro model is October 2025; that’s because it would tease the device at this year’s Meta Connect in September/October 2024, and then launch it the following year’s event as it did with the original Quest Pro and Quest 3.

But there are a few reasons we could see it launch sooner or later. On the later release date side of things we have the rumored Meta Quest 3 Lite – a cheaper version of the Meta Quest 3. Meta may want to push this affordable model out the gate sooner rather than later, meaning that it might need to take a release slot that could have been used by the Quest Pro 2.

Alternatively, Meta may want to push a high-end model out ASAP so as to not let the Apple Vision Pro and others like the Samsung XR headset corner the high-end VR market. If this is the case it could forgo its usual tease then release strategy and just release the headset later this year – or tease it at Connect 2024 then launch it in early 2025 rather than a year later in late 2025 as it usually would.

This speculation all assumes a Meta Quest Pro 2 is even on the way – though Meta has strongly suggested that another Pro model would come in the future; we’ll just have to wait and see what’s up its sleeve.

Meta Quest Pro 2: Specs

Based on LG and Meta’s announcement of their official partnership to bring OLED displays to Meta VR headsets in the future, it’s likely that the Meta Quest Pro 2 would feature OLED screens. While these kind of displays are typically pricey, the Quest Pro 2 is expected to be a high-end model (with a high price tag), and boasting OLED panels would put it on par with other high-end XR products like the Apple Vision Pro.

It also seems likely the Meta Quest Pro 2 will boast a Snapdragon XR2 Plus Gen 2 chipset – the successor to the Gen 1 used by the Quest Pro. If it launches further in the future than we expect it would instead boast a currently unannounced Gen 3 model.

While rumors haven’t teased any other specs, we also assume the device would feature full-color mixed reality like Meta’s Quest 3 and Quest Pro – though ideally the passthrough would be higher quality than either of these devices (or at least, better than the Quest Pro’s rather poor mixed reality).

Beyond this, we predict the device would have specs at least as good as its predecessor. By that we mean we expect the base Quest Pro 2 would come with 12GB of RAM, 256GB of storage and a two-hour minimum battery life.

Meta Quest Pro 2: What we want to see

We’ve already highlighted in depth what we want to see from the Meta Quest Pro 2 – namely it should ditch eye-tracking and replace it with four different features. But we’ll recap some of those points here, and make a few new ones of things we want to see from the Quest Pro 2.

Vastly better mixed-reality passthrough, more entertainment apps and, 4K OLED displays would go a long way to making the Meta Quest Pro 2 feel a lot more like a Vision Pro competitor – so we hope to see them on the Quest Pro 2.

Eye-tracking could also help, but Meta really needs to prove it’s worthwhile. So far every instance of the tech feels like an expensive tech demo for a feature that’s neat, but not all that useful.

Ignoring specs and design for a second, our most important hope is that the Quest Pro 2 isn’t as prohibitively expensive as the Apple Vision Pro. While the Vision Pro is great, $3,500 is too much even for a high-end VR headset when you consider the realities of how and how often the device will be used. Ideally the Quest Pro 2 would be at most $2,000 / £2,000 / AU$3,000, though until we know more about its specs we won’t know how realistic our request is.

Lastly we hope the device is light, perhaps with a removable battery pack like the one seen in the HTC Vive XR Elite. This would allow someone who wants to work at their desk or sit back and watch a film in VR wear a much lighter device for the extended period of time (provided their near a power source). Alternatively they can plug the battery in and enjoy a typical standalone VR experience – to us this would be a win-win.

Realme GT Neo 6 SE TENAA Listing Shows Design; Model Spotted on Geekbench

Realme GT Neo 6 SE will launch in China soon. Although the company has yet to announce the specific launch date, it has confirmed several features of the upcoming handset, including processor and display details. Recently, a leaked design render and a live image of the Realme GT Neo 6 SE surfaced online, suggesting the design of the awaited smartphone. Now the design of the model has been spotted on a certification site. It has also reportedly appeared on a popular benchmarking platform.

The Realme GT Neo 6 SE with the model number RMX3850 has been listed on the TENAA certification website, which shows the design of the handset, according to a MySmartPrice report. The design appears similar to the ones that leaked previously. The front panel is seen with a curved display and the right edge appears to hold the power button and volume rockers.

Seen in a dark grey/black shade, the dual rear camera and the LED flash units of the Realme GT Neo 6 SE are placed within three circular slots arranged in a triangular manner. These are placed in the top left corner of the back panel within a rectangular camera module spanning edge to edge, in a slightly darker shade.

The aforementioned report also mentioned that the Realme GT Neo 6 SE with the model number RMX3850 appeared on the Geekbench listing. The phone was seen with Android 14-based UI, an octa-core chipset paired with an Adreno 732 GPU and 16GB of RAM. It scored 1,389 and 3,960 points in the single-core and multi-core benchmarking tests, respectively.

The Realme GT Neo 6 SE has previously been confirmed to feature a Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 SoC and a customised 1.5K 8T LTPO OLED BOE display with up to 120Hz refresh rate and 6,000 nits of local peak brightness level. It has previously been tipped to be backed with a 5,500mAh battery with 100W wired fast charging support.

Protecting digital integrity in the age of deepfakes and identity fraud

Has identity fraud experienced a coup? AI-powered synthesized media attacks, commonly referred to as deepfakes, have turned the fraud landscape on its head, spiking 3000% in 12 months and dominating discussions around what may destabilize digital integrity and trust in the years to come.

Deepfakes are fast becoming the tactic du jour for fraud. The increased availability of generative AI and face-swap apps are enabling cybercriminals to significantly increase their deepfake fraud attempts by impersonation. It can enable fraudsters to manipulate someone’s facial expression, voice, body language, and even skin texture. As sophisticated as the technology has become, it will only continue to evolve and become more convincing. Online fraud tactics are akin to a virus, mutating to avoid cyber defenses to cause maximum damage.

That’s why businesses must stay one step ahead with a robust prevention strategy that can identify and protect against emerging threats, and keep end-users and their business safe. At the same time, this strategy must also be nuanced and recognize that it cannot cause unnecessary friction for legitimate end-users looking to register or access online services. It must be user-friendly and accessible. Achieving this will protect digital integrity amid surging identity theft, and crucially maintain inclusion and trust in online businesses.

How the automation era conceived deepfake fraud

The global fraud landscape has shifted substantially in recent years, in line with wider digital trends – notably mainstream accessibility to AI and automation tools. Pre-pandemic, a fraudster followed the typical working week pattern, a clock-in-clock-out, nine-to-five shift with weekends typically seeing a drop in activity. But these habits have changed as fraudsters have understood that AI and automation can mean they can scale their attacks, around the clock, to hit as many targets as possible. This means that industries which have historically witnessed high fraud volumes as a result of large cash incentives, like gambling and gaming, have seen rates spike as high as 80% in the last year.

As businesses have moved to protect their operations from these fraud surges, bad actors have expanded their library of attack options. While most identity fraud is still focused on producing physical ID counterfeits, fraudsters are experimenting with AI to alter digital images and videos – creating deepfakes – to commit identity fraud, bypass cybersecurity systems and develop fake online media content.

Getting granular: Deepfakes versus cheap fakes

When we think about deepfakes, we often think about sophisticated videos depicting political or celebrity impersonations. But it’s important to clarify that not all deepfake approaches are the same, and fraudsters will look to deploy the technology on varying scales, based on resources, technical skillsets and desired outcomes. The moniker ‘cheap fakes’ signals the best differentiator – these are significantly less sophisticated than what we’d consider as a typical deepfake. Think budget film versus blockbuster – same concept, very different execution. Also known as shallowfakes or low-tech fakes, cheap fakes use basic video editing software to manipulate imagery. They may include minor tweaks like caption changes or image cropping, but they are much easier to detect, particularly to the untrained eye, as they lack realism.

But the threat they pose shouldn’t be overlooked; they still perpetrate large quantities of identity fraud. Particularly in today’s climate, where difficult economic circumstances mean many are becoming amateur fraudsters, cheap fakes are the first option for basement hackers armed with basic malware code. Attacks can still be deployed in tandem with larger fraud corporations to impersonate legitimate customers and steal identities at onboarding or accessing existing accounts. They can have other uses too, for instance launching a bespoke misinformation campaign which could reach and defraud large audiences such as the deepfake of Martin Lewis with an investment scam.

A proactive approach to deepfake detection

In any form, deepfakes can disrupt access to online services, manipulate or mislead people, and dismantle company reputation, so businesses must take a proactive approach to mitigating the threat. But they must find the right level of friction – ensuring customers can register or access services seamlessly, while keeping bad actors out.

Firstly, businesses must train and learn how to spot a deepfake, and there are certain tell-tale signs to look for. In videos, for instance, AI hasn’t yet recreated natural eye movement and blinking, and a closer look at a deepfaked individual may show facial glitches and prolonged passivity. Videos also frequently fail to sync audio and image seamlessly, so businesses should follow the audio closely and watch the speaker’s pronunciation and any unnatural pauses for inconsistencies. Colors and shadows suffer the same shortcomings, and perfect accuracy is rare. Businesses should look for shadows that appear out of place, particularly when the person moves, or colors that change.

Secondly, businesses need to invest in their cyber defense resources. Fraud is a game of cat and mouse, and businesses need the right partner and platform onboard to bolster their defenses to stay ahead. As deepfakes are commonly hosted on web browsers as opposed to applications native to any given operating system, businesses should be looking to incorporate a solution that aligns with web-native customer journeys and detects pre-recorded videos, emulators, and fake webcams. There will also be times when AI needs to refer more sensitive or complex cases for review, so the right investment will combine the power of AI with human expertise, for a blended and comprehensive security experience. This way, customers are not falsely rejected, and any convincing deepfake attempts can be identified by a trained expert.

Avoiding the iceberg

There’s no doubt that deepfakes have transformed the nature of identity fraud amid today’s digital landscape. Operating in the mainstream, deepfakes pose a significant threat to digital trust and integrity and have the potential to destabilize the relationship between customers and online businesses. Businesses must go on the offensive, training their teams to spot deepfake attempts and invest in sophisticated AI and biometric solutions that can keep them one step ahead. Vivo X Fold 3 Series, Vivo X100 Series Confirmed to Support 5.5G Networks

Vivo is gearing up to roll out 5.5G (5G-Advanced or 5GA) upgrades via OTA (Over-the-Air) updates to its flagship smartphones soon. The newly launched Vivo X Fold 3, Vivo X Fold 3 Pro and the Vivo X100 series are confirmed to receive 5.5G connectivity initially alongside a few iQoo smartphones. The announcement comes a few days after China Mobile announced the commercial launch of its 5.5G network last week. The new generation of wireless technology brings upgrades over the existing 5G network and ensures faster download speeds. Oppo’s flagship Find X7 series is believed to be the first device to support 5.5G networks.

The Chinese smartphone brand through Weibo revealed that Vivo X Fold 3, Vivo X Fold 3 Pro and Vivo X100 series will get the 5.5G connectivity later this month with an OTA update. Vivo sub-brand iQoo’s iQoo 12 series and iQoo Neo 9 series will also be among the first devices to get 5.5G support.

Additionally, Vivo’s Product Manager Han Boxiao posted an image of the Vivo X100 Pro on the Chinese micro-blogging platform running on China Mobile’s 5.5G network. The image suggests a download speed of 3619.19Mbps and an upload speed of 160.75Mbps. The 5.5G is claimed to deliver up to 10Gbps downlink and 1Gbps uplink speeds.

China Mobile announced the commercial launch of 5.5G last week. Following that, Oppo has revealed plans to bring 5.5G to its Find X7 series smartphones. The 5.5G networks provide improved data speeds over the current 5G networks.

The Xiaomi 14 Ultra is also getting 5.5G capability in China. China Mobile is aiming to cover over 300 cities, including Beijing and Shanghai, with its 5.5G network by the end of the year.
