Apple’s smartphone shipments dropped about 10 percent in the first quarter of 2024, hurt by intensifying competition by Android smartphone makers aiming for the top spot, data from research firm IDC showed on Sunday.

Global smartphone shipments increased 7.8 percent to 289.4 million units during January-March, with Samsung, at 20.8 percent market share, clinching the top phonemaker spot from Apple.

The iPhone-maker’s steep sales decline comes after its strong performance in the December quarter when it overtook Samsung as the world’s No.1 phone maker. It’s back to the second spot, with 17.3 percent market share, as Chinese brands such as Huawei gain market share.

Xiaomi, one of China’s top smartphone makers, occupied the third position with a market share of 14.1 percent during the first quarter.

South Korea’s Samsung, which launched its latest flagship smartphone lineup – Galaxy S24 series – in the beginning of the year, shipped more than 60 million phones during the period.

Global sales of Galaxy S24 smartphones jumped 8 percent, compared to last year’s Galaxy S23 series during their first three weeks of availability, data provider Counterpoint previously said.

In the first quarter, Apple shipped 50.1 million iPhones, down from 55.4 million units it shipped same period last year, according to IDC.

Apple’s smartphone shipments in China shrank 2.1 percent in the final quarter of 2023 from a year earlier.

The drop underscores the challenges facing the US firm in its third biggest market, as some Chinese companies and government agencies limit employees’ use of Apple devices, a measure that mirrors US government restrictions on Chinese apps on security grounds.

The Cupertino, California-based company in June will hold its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), where it will highlight updates to the software powering iPhones, iPads, and other Apple devices.

Investors are closely watching for updates on artificial intelligence development at Apple, which has so far spoken little about incorporating the AI technology into its devices. The company earlier this year lost the crown as the world’s most valuable company to Microsoft.

While developer Square Enix has not confirmed a launch date or the official title for the final game in the remake trilogy, the game should likely be released on PS5 sometime during the ongoing console generation cycle. Now, the studio has provided an update about the launch timeline for the third and final game in the Final Fantasy remake trilogy project.

The information about the release timeline of the game arrives as part of interviews from the developers published in the newly published Final Fantasy 7 Remake Ultimania companion book. An X user (@aitaikimochi) posted some excerpts on the microblogging website last week, which claim that the story for Final Fantasy 7 remake part 3 has already been completed and the game could arrive in three years.

According to the book’s excerpts posted on X, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth creative director Tetsuya Nomura believes that voice recording for the game could begin soon. Additionally, Final Fantasy 7 remake series producer Yoshinori Kitase reportedly said in the book that the development period for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was efficient because Square Enix retained the same staff from Final Fantasy 7 Remake (the first game in the new trilogy). Kitase reportedly said that the third part would also have the same development team.

According to Kitase, the third game in the remake trilogy could take the same amount of time to be ready as Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, thus hinting that part 3 could arrive in three years, which would place the launch window sometime in 2027. In the book, Kitase reportedly said that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was completed in three years, with one additional year spent on the development of the DLC.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was released on February 29, exclusively on PS5. It serves as the second game in the Final Fantasy 7 remake project and a sequel to Final Fantasy Remake, which was released in April 2020. Square Enix has not yet confirmed the title for the final game in the trilogy,

Motorola Edge 50 Ultra, Edge 50 Fusion, and Edge 50 Pro are expected to be announced in international markets on April 16. Just a day ahead of the anticipated release, the Chinese smartphone brand has seemingly teased the design and fast-charging details of the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra. The handset is shown to have a 50-megapixel triple rear camera setup. It is already confirmed to run on Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 SoC.

Motorola, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), revealed that its upcoming Edge 50 series smartphone will come with 125W TurboPower fast charging. The company is still keeping the moniker under wraps for some reason, but it is evident that the handset in talks is the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra.

The teaser video gives a first look at the design of the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra. It is shown in a Peach Fuzz colour with a hole punch display and curved sides. It appears to have a triple rear camera unit, led by a 50-megapixel primary sensor with support for OIS (optical image stabilisation).

Motorola earlier confirmed that Edge 50 Ultra will ship with Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset. A recent Geekbench listing also suggested it will run on Android 14 and offer up to 12GB RAM. It scored 1,947 points in single-core testing and a multi-core score of 5,149 on Geekbench.

As per past leaks, the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra will get a 6.7-inch OLED display with 165Hz refresh rate. It could pack a 50-megapixel front camera and a 4,500mAh battery with 50W wireless charging support.

Motorola Edge 50 Ultra is expected to go on sale in the US with Motorola Edge+ 2024 or Edge Ultra 2024 moniker with a price tag of $999 (roughly Rs. 83,000).

The Motorola Edge 50 series with three entries — Motorola Edge 50 Pro, Motorola Edge 50 Fusion and Motorola Edge 50 Ultra — is expected to be unveiled on April 16 globally. The Motorola Edge 50 Pro with Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 SoC is already available in India. The Motorola Edge 50 Fusion is expected to be powered by Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 SoC.

Technology has always been a great leveller. From the industrial age to the age of the internet, it has improved the quality of life for the masses and made things previously unimaginable more accessible. One only needs to take a look at their smartphone to understand how communicating with someone sitting thousands of kilometres away has become so common that most do not even think about it much. Before Graham Bell, such long-distance communication was only available to the rich and influential due to the high costs associated with it.

Such examples are countless. From social media providing true connectivity across the world, smartphone apps digitising tasks that required physical presence and took away hours from a day, and remote work that empowers people living far away from corporate hubs with better earning opportunities, technology has democratised accessibility itself. In many ways, generative artificial intelligence (AI) has become the next torch-bearer to expand accessibility to new frontiers.

One such area where accessibility can make a big impact is the music industry. Despite the arrival of independent streaming platforms such as Spotify, SoundCloud, Apple Music, and more, making music distribution cheaper, the problem statement that remains is music creation. Today, original background music is a much-needed commodity. From professional artists to social media creators and podcasters, everyone requires music tracks for their content, preferably original, to avoid any copyright strikes by platforms (YouTube content creators are well aware of its effect) or a lawsuit.

But creating music is not everyone’s cup of tea. Likely, if you have not trained for years to master one or multiple musical instruments, yet you want original and unique music for your professional needs, you find yourself stuck with only two expensive solutions — hire a music producer or a session musician, or pay online to buy stock music. But not anymore, because this is where AI has stepped in.

Take the example of Beatoven.ai, an Indian AI-powered music generation platform that lets users write a simple text prompt to generate new and unique background music within ten seconds. To understand how this technology works, its various implications, and the experience of running such an innovative startup, we at Gadgets 360 spoke with Mansoor Rahimat Khan, the co-founder and CEO of Beatoven.ai.

Mansoor Rahimat Khan comes from the Gwalior-Indore-Dharwad Gharana of Sitar, a famous family of musicians that have played and shaped modern-day Sitar music for seven generations. Khan was no different, but he chose a different path owing to another of his passions — technology. “I completed my graduation from the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Goa, in electronics and communication engineering. This was also when I started delving into the space that lies at the intersection of music and technology,” Khan told us.

After working for a few years, Khan met Siddharth Bhardwaj, an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Allahabad (now known as Prayagraj), and a music enthusiast. The duo, sharing similar interests, identified the problem of music licensing in content and wanted to build something that could make music more accessible to millions of creators — whether on social media or professionally pursuing a career. That was the genesis of Beatoven.ai.

But there was one problem. Even as the duo began working on the product and the startup in 2021, their solution to the problem required generative AI, which was still a year away from reaching the mainstream (in November 2022, ChatGPT arguably started the gen AI race).

“Initially, the prototype we built in 2021 was a very bare-bone platform. Users could select a genre and a tempo and specify a duration, and we would generate an original piece of music. Back then, no large language models (LLM) existed, so we had to build our entire tech stack from scratch. Today, we have our own proprietary tech that we started building back then,” Khan said.

Things became easier once the AI wave came about, and Beatoven.ai benefitted from the availability of LLMs in the market, using which they could better equip their platform to cater to its current user base of one million.

The Beatoven.ai platform

The web-only platform is a generative AI-powered music generation tool for content creators. Users, once they have signed up, can write a text prompt to generate original background music. Alternatively, the platform also allows users to pick a tempo, duration, genre, and mood to create music.

Once the user has added the input, the AI takes over and generates four separate tracks. The platform also offers post-generation editing features where users can change an instrument, reduce or increase volume in specific parts, or recompose an entire section of the track. Khan said a single track can be up to 15 minutes long, although there is no upper limit, and the suggested value exists to keep rendering time short. A track of an average length of 1-2 minutes will take about 10 seconds to generate. Based on data shared by the company, since inception, Beatoven has generated 15 lakh soundtracks and boasts 3 lakh downloads.

The platform currently does not allow users to make fusion tracks where two or more genres are blended, but Khan told Gadgets 360 exclusively that the company will soon release a new update that will add this feature.

We also tested out the platform and found the music to be quite realistic. The following song was created using the prompt “Create a high-energy EDM anthem with a beat drop that is perfect for a dance party”.

The Beatoven.ai tech-stack

There are two components to the Beatoven platform. The first is the LLM, which allows users to type prompts in natural language and then process that information in a format the AI can understand to convert it into music. The startup uses GPT models for this part.

The second component understands the user intent and generates a track that fulfils the parameter. This architecture was created by the company natively. The AI model uses contrastive learning architecture to make it happen. Khan highlights that the inspiration for this technique came from OpenAI’s CLIP model, but quickly points out that the OpenAI model was built for text and images, and Beatoven was the first to use it for sound and music. Due to it being a proprietary work, the company was also able to optimise the process. For instance, Khan told us that the platform uses CPU inference instead of GPU inference. This is notable given even small LLMs require GPU inference to run.

The startup has sourced almost 1,00,000 data samples from independent artists to train the AI model. The company collaborated with nearly 250 artists globally and paid them for exclusive tracks. Khan claimed that the company had ethically sourced all of its training data and did not scour the internet for it. Interestingly, Adobe is reportedly doing the same at present to build an AI video generation model.

However, data, today, has become an incredibly costly resource that is required continually to upgrade AI models and improve them. While Beatoven continues its practice of collaborating with artists to procure data even today, in the future, it plans to cut costs by introducing a revenue-sharing model, where artists would be paid based on the number of tracks generated where the AI used the song sample or the data.

How Beatoven.ai plans to deal with the competition

AI-based music generation is not entirely a unique proposition today. Many players have entered the segment, recognising the potential. Some include Google with its MusicLM, OpenAI with its Jukebox, and Adobe with its Project Music GenAI Control. However, none of these models is available to the public today, and they remain under development. But competition for Beatoven still exists. A big rival for them would be Suno AI, which not only creates music but also adds AI-generated voices to the music to offer a full-fledged song.

In answer to the concern, Khan highlighted that the company offers unlimited music generation without adding a rate limit. Further, he highlights that the company is building an entire ecosystem. While on one side, it is catering to users by generating music, on the other hand, it also offers a place for artists to sell their original music. The entire suite of offerings, along with the promise of “ethically sourced and copyright-free unique music”, is what Khan believes gives Beatoven the edge in the market.

A look towards the future

Beatoven is now looking at expansion of its platform to cater to a global user base. The startup has already begun onboarding artists from different parts of the world as 70 percent of its user base resides outside the country. Khan believes this global outlook, along with focusing on improving the AI model, will be the key to hitting its target of five million users in the next two years.

Technology can often be a two-edged sword. While the benefits of AI-generated music cannot be understated, the question that arises is whether such easy and affordable music creation can have an adverse impact on aspiring musicians. Is the commodification of music really the right way to go?

Khan believes while music creation is going to become the next big disruption in the industry, it is unlikely to take away the dreams and livelihood of musicians and singers. “I believe artists are still going to be at the centre of this disruption because AI cannot compete with human creativity,” he said.

OnePlus Pad 2 may be introduced in the country later this year. The company hasn’t revealed any details about the tablet yet. However, rumours about the purported model have surfaced online. A tipster has suggested the launch timeline of the tablet. It is expected to succeed the OnePlus Pad, which was unveiled globally in February 2023, and made its way to India in April the same year. The OnePlus Pad 2 is expected to come with upgraded features over the preceding model.

Tipster Max Jambor (@MaxJmb) claimed in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that the OnePlus Pad 2 is expected to launch in the second half of 2024, that is, sometime between July and December this year. The tipster did not reveal any other details about the rumoured tablet. 

OnePlus Pad launched in India with a price tag of Rs. 37,999 for the 8GB + 128GB option, while the 12GB + 256GB variant is priced at Rs. 39,999. The tablet is available in a single Halo Green shade. 

The OnePlus Pad sports an 11.61-inch display with a 2,800 x 2,000 pixels resolution, 144Hz refresh rate, a 7: 5 aspect ratio, 500 nits of peak brightness level, and an 88 percent screen-to-body ratio. The tablet is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC paired with up to 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 256GB of UFS 3.1 onboard storage. It ships with Android 13-based OxygenOS 13.1.

In the camera department, the OnePlus Pad gets a single 13-megapixel rear camera sensor and an 8-megapixel selfie shooter. The tablet is backed by a 9,510mAh battery with support for 67W wired SuperVOOC fast charging. It measures 258mm x 189.4mm x 6.5mm in size and weighs 552g.

Meanwhile, the company also launched the OnePlus Pad Go in India in October 2023 carrying a price tag of Rs. 19,999 for the 8GB + 128GB option of the Wi-Fi-only variant. It is offered in a Twin Mint colourway. This tablet comes with an 11.35-inch 2.4K LCD screen, a MediaTek Helio G99 SoC, an 8-megapixel rear camera, an 8-megapixel selfie shooter, and an 8,000mAh battery with 33W SuperVOOC charging support.

The overall crypto market, including Bitcoin, did not see any major changes over the weekend. Volatility continues to obstruct profit streaks for several cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin, for instance, stepped into Monday, April 15 trading at a loss of 1.40 percent. The current price point of Bitcoin is at $62,897 (roughly Rs. 52.5 lakh) in India, as per Gadgets360’s crypto price tracker. On international exchanges such as Binance, BTC is trading at $67,320 (roughly Rs. 56 lakh).

In conversation with Gadgets360, Mudrex CEO Edul Patel said Bitcoin’s price dropped primarily due to increased liquidations and growing geopolitical tensions between Iran and Israel.

“Bitcoin seems to be range bound between $60,000 (roughly Rs. 50 lakh) and $73,000 (roughly Rs. 60.9 lakh). However, bulls are defending the $60,775 (roughly Rs. 50.7 lakh) level. The immediate support of Bitcoin lies at the $64,500 (roughly Rs. 53.8 lakh) level and the resistance is at the $67,900 (roughly Rs. 56.6 lakh) level,” Patel said.

Lesser number of cryptocurrencies saw price dips alongside BTC on Monday. These include Tether, Tron, Monero, Qtum, and Circuits of Value.

Ether showed some price growth over the weekend unlike Bitcoin. With a small gain of 3.93 percent, ETH is trading at $3,126 (roughly Rs. 2.60 lakh). Despite these minor profits that ETH has managed to reflect in the recent past days, the asset continues to be far away from its previously set all-time high of $4,500 (roughly Rs. 3.75 lakh) — that it had claimed in November 2021. On Binance, the value of ETH stands at $3,024 (roughly Rs. 2.52 lakh).

“Technical analysis of ETH (+7.3 percent) showcases a strong trend formation, indicating that the best is yet to come. Some analysts are even predicting ETH to cross $6,000 (roughly Rs. 5 lakh),” Parth Chaturvedi, Investments Lead, CoinSwitch Ventures told Gadgets360.

Majority cryptocurrencies trailed behind Ether on Monday and managed to see profits. These include Binance Coin, Solana, USD Coin, Ripple, Dogecoin, and Cardano.

Avalanche, Shiba Inu, Bitcoin Cash, Polkadot, Chainlink, Polygon, Litecoin, and Uniswap also recorded small gains.

The overall crypto market cap rose by 5.42 percent in the last 24 hours. The market valuation, as of Monday, stands at $2.37 trillion (roughly Rs. 2,840 crore), showed CoinMarketCap.

In other news, Bloomberg reported that BTC and ETH ETFs could soon launch in Hong Kong; even before the BTC halving event. This could potentially unlock up to $25 billion (roughly Rs. 2,08,583 crore) in demand, as per Matrixport, as investors from mainland China could potentially move billions through the Stock Connect program.

Meta AI made its debut in India last week when some users spotted the generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot appearing on the WhatsApp app. Now, Meta AI has also started showing up for some Instagram and Messenger users in the country as well. The Llama-powered chat assistant is a general capability chatbot and is capable of natural language conversations, answering questions, generating images, writing essays, and more. The Meta AI chatbot can be found in Instagram DM in the search bar as a blue ring with pink hues.

The access to the AI-powered chatbot appears to be limited with multiple users reporting not seeing the feature. A Meta spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that the company was testing the new feature in India and parts of Africa. The statement read, “Our generative AI-powered experiences are under development in varying phases, and we’re testing a range of them publicly in a limited capacity.”

With this move, India now has access to all the major AI chatbots including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft’s Copilot, Anthropic’s Claude, Perplexity AI search engine, and the Meta AI. The social media giant launched the chatbot in September 2023 but its availability was limited to the US and a few more regions. The AI assistant could not be accessed in India before this.

Since Meta AI is a generalist chatbot, it can perform a wide range of tasks. Focusing on the text-only features, Meta AI can answer questions, generate text, translate text, summarise large blocks of text, write essays, analyse data, perform mathematical calculations, and even assist with coding-related tasks. The AI chatbot is connected to the Internet via Bing, so it can provide real-time information as well.

Meta AI can also generate images which is powered by OpenAI’s DALL-E. To generate an image, you need to type the forward slash and write “Imagine” followed by the desired prompt. For example, you can write “/imagine a sunflower garden and kids playing around it”. However, do note that the chatbot does not fulfil any requests for images of real-life personalities. Further, all Meta-generated images will have an “Imagined with Meta” watermark to distinguish it from real images.
