The growing influence of artificial intelligence and its potential to bring disruptive changes to Hollywood has forced Netflix to raise a warning against the new technology. In its annual report filed with the SEC, the US streaming giant has added generative AI to its list of risk factors.

Read what Netflix has to about AI

In a recently filed report (seen by Variety), Netflix added a new part to its section about risk factors in the section about video competition.US companies are required to outline these risk factors under SEC rules.
The company said: “New technological developments, including the development and use of generative artificial intelligence, are rapidly evolving. If our competitors gain an advantage by using such technologies, our ability to compete effectively and our results of operations could be adversely impacted.
In addition, the use or adoption of new and emerging technologies may increase our exposure to intellectual property claims, and the availability of copyright and other intellectual property protection for AI-generated material is uncertain.”

What Netflix removed from its risk factor section

Apart from the AI warning, the remaining risk factors of Netflix in 2023 remained the same. However, the company removed a part from the report which was mentioned in the 2022 report. The part about the risks posed by the Covid pandemic (also present in the report of 2020 and 2021) was removed from the latest report.

This part said: “The ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic disrupted our business, increased our costs, led to delays in content releases and may again impact our business and results of operations.”

How AI disrupted Hollywood in 2023

In 2023, two Hollywood unions, WGA and SAG-AFTRA, went on strike as studios started using AI for their productions. The members of the union were concerned about the technology hurting their livelihoods.
During the writers’ strike, Netflix’s job listing for a product manager in the company’s machine-learning group with a salary range of between $300,000 and $900,000 was also criticised by the writers. Striking union members protested against Netflix’s posting, even though this job centred on AI developments for content personalisation and optimising payment-processing systems, not for generative AI-based projects.

New iPad Pro, iPad Air models

The iPad Pro lineup is rumoured to receive a major makeover, including new display panels and size. Gurman hints at a switch to OLED displays for the first time.Apple has already incorporated OLED displays in the iPhone and Watch and the iPad seems next in line. The MacBook Air is rumoured to get the M3 processor. Apple introduced M3-powered MacBook Pros in October 23 and the same chipset is set to make way to the MacBook Air.No major design changes are expected, but the M3’s power could further solidify the MacBook Air’s position as a top choice for portable productivity.
While Gurman is quite accurate with his Apple leaks, it’s important to remember that these are still just rumours. Apple is known for its secrecy, and the final specs and features of the new devices could differ. However, considering Gurman’s track record of accurate predictions, there’s a good chance that Apple fans have a lot to look forward to in March.
It is not clear whether Apple will hold a launch event or announce the new products via a press release.

New Apple MacBook Air, iPad Pro, iPad Air to Launch by the End of March, Production Underway: Mark Gurman
New Apple MacBook Air, iPad Pro, iPad Air to Launch by the End of March, Production Underway: Mark Gurman

[ad_1]

Apple appears to be working on new product releases for the coming months before its WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) event in June. The Cupertino-based company is yet to disclose its launch plans, but ahead of it, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman signals that new iPad and MacBook Air models will debut in March. Apple could unveil a new iPad Pro, a refreshed iPad Air, and a larger iPad Air in March. The MacBook Air is expected to come in 13-inch and 15-inch display options with the company’s in-house M3 processors.

In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman reports that the new iPad Pro and MacBook Air models are currently under mass production and will be released by the end of March. The MacBook Air is said to be available in 13-inch and 15-inch screen sizes and could be powered by Apple’s latest M3 processors. They are expected to replace the current M2-powered MacBook Air 13-inch and 15-inch models. Further, the analyst claims that Apple is planning an end of March launch for a refreshed iPad Air and a larger iPad Air.

New iPad Pro is said to be accompanied by new accessories. Gurman states that the first beta version of iOS 17.4 suggests accessories like Magic Keyboards and Apple Pencils for the iPad Pro. It is expected to include a landscape Face ID camera.

The 2024 iPad model is speculated to come with new OLED screens. This would offer better colour contrast and power efficiency gains compared to mini-LED screens. The iPad Pro model is said to run on the M3 chip. Apple could launch the iPad Air in a bigger 12.9-inch display size. The next-generation iPad Pro is also expected to offer MagSafe charging. There will be additional upgrades as well.

However, Apple has not disclosed any details about the new iPad Pro, iPad Air or MacBook units yet. So, all these details should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Google Lumiere Multimodal AI Video Generation Tool Unveiled; Can Create 5-Second Videos From Text, Images
Google Lumiere Multimodal AI Video Generation Tool Unveiled; Can Create 5-Second Videos From Text, Images

[ad_1]

Google unveiled its latest artificial intelligence (AI) model, Lumiere, last week. The new AI model is a multimodal video generation tool that can generate 5-second-long videos. It supports both text-to-video and image-to-video generation and joins existing AI models such as Runway Gen-2 and Pika 1.0. As per Google, Lumiere uses a Space-Time U-Net (STUNet) architecture that innovates how motion occurs in an AI video, making it appear realistic. The platform is not open to the public as of yet.

In an accompanying preprint paper, the research team behind Lumiere explained that the major innovation in motion comes from creating the video in a single process instead of putting together still frames. Due to this, both the spatial (the objects in the video) and temporal (how things move around in the video) aspects of the video generation are created simultaneously. For the layperson, this results in perceiving motions as they occur in nature. To achieve this, Lumiere generates a larger number of 80 frames instead of Stable Diffusion’s 25 frames.

“By deploying both spatial and (importantly) temporal down- and up-sampling and leveraging a pre-trained text-to-image diffusion model, our model learns to directly generate a full-frame-rate, low-resolution video by processing it in multiple space-time scales,” the paper added.

While Google Lumiere cannot be tested at the moment, the website is live and enthusiasts can check various videos created using the AI model as well as the text prompt and input images used to create the output. It can also generate videos in various styles, cinemagraphs that let users animate a certain part of the video, and inpainting where a masked-out video or image is used and the AI completes it based on the prompt.

Google’s latest AI video generation tool competes with existing AI models such as Runway Gen-2, which was launched in March 2023, and Pika Lab’s Pika 1.0, both of which are accessible to the public. While Pika can create 3-second-long videos (which can be increased for 4 more seconds), Runway can generate videos as long as 4 seconds. Both models are multimodal and allow video editing as well.
