Chinese AR Glasses Maker Raises $60 Million to Compete With Apple, Meta and Google
Chinese AR Glasses Maker Raises $60 Million to Compete With Apple, Meta and Google

[ad_1]

Augmented reality glasses maker Xreal is raising fresh funding at a valuation that tops $1 billion, according to Chief Executive Officer Chi Xu, aiming to get out ahead of future devices from Apple Inc., Meta Platforms Inc. and Alphabet Inc.’s Google.

The Chinese startup is raising $60 million in the round, bringing its total to more than $300 million, Chi said in an interview. That latest money comes from a key supply chain partner that he declined to identify.

“This will help us scale our manufacturing capabilities and research and development,” he said, adding that the company has enough capacity to meet demand for its glasses this year but needs the money to fulfill orders in 2025.

We are on WhatsApp Channels. Click to join.

Xreal is looking to blaze a trail in augmented reality — technology that overlays data and imagery over real-world views. The company accounted for about half of the market for AR-only devices in the third quarter of last year, according to research firm IDC. The larger combined virtual reality and AR market — known as mixed reality — features Meta as the leader, followed by Sony Group Corp. and ByteDance Ltd. Xreal holds about 4% of the overall market.

Chi said that his company has the ability to produce between 500,000 and 1 million units this year. The investment should allow for production of 2 million devices next year. The company expects to generate $100 million to $150 million in revenue this year and between $200 million and $300 million in 2025, according to Chi, who said he wants Xreal to go public in the US within two years.

The 7-year-old business now has about 600 employees and is based in Beijing. The company’s Air glasses present notifications, games and video in a wearer’s field of view. Chi said that Xreal’s products have made gains on more costly technology from Magic Leap Inc. and Microsoft Corp., which sells a headset called the HoloLens.

“2023 was a very good year, and the market size pretty much doubled,” Chi said. The company, which said it gets the majority of its sales from Amazon.com Inc.’s website, offers AR glasses for as little as a few hundred dollars. But it believes its latest pair — the Air 2 Ultra — is what will drive future revenue.

“There’s a good chance we can do 50,000 units of Ultra this year,” Chi said, adding that the cheaper models are “definitely easier to sell” and that mass consumers aren’t seeking as many bells and whistles as what they might get on rival products.

Xreal doesn’t have plans to get into virtual reality — a more immersive technology that’s used in Apple’s new Vision Pro — but Chi believes his company will compete with the iPhone maker in the years to come.

“I think we’re three to five years ahead of them in AR,” Chi said. “They are catching up, though. So we need to keep up and push the boundary.”

During development of the Vision Pro, Apple also worked on lightweight AR-only glasses similar to what Xreal offers. The company paused work on that device because it didn’t think the technology was ready yet, Bloomberg News reported last year. Meta and Google have said they’re planning their own consumer AR glasses for release in the coming years.

Deepfake porn photos of Taylor Swift: What Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has to say
Deepfake porn photos of Taylor Swift: What Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has to say

[ad_1]

AI-generated images of Taylor Swift emerged online recently. Microsoft tools may reportedly be connected to the fake Taylor Swift images. A 404 Media report claims that members of “Telegram group dedicated to abusive images of women” used Microsoft’s AI-powered image creation tool to make the fake photographs of Swift.
Microsoft recently renamed Bing Image Creator to Image Creator from Designer. The 404 Media report has not specified which tool was used by members of the Telegram group, but there’s a good chance it was Bing Image Creator/Image Creator from Designer. Unlike more conventional doctored images that have troubled celebrities in the past, the Swift images appear to have been created using an artificial intelligence image-generator that can instantly create new images from a written prompt.
What Satya Nadella said
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella discussed the situation with NBC Nightly News in an interview. He talked about what can be done to guide AI and guard against misuse. Nadella said in his interview, “I would say two things. One, is, again, I go back to, I think, what’s our responsibility, which is all of the guardrails that we need to place around the technology so that there’s more safe content that’s being produced. And there’s a lot to be done and a lot being done there. And we can do, especially when you have law and law enforcement and tech platforms that can come together, I think we can govern a lot more than we think- we give ourselves credit for.”
Most commercial AI image-generators have safeguards to prevent abuse, but commenters on anonymous message boards discussed tactics for how to circumvent the moderation, especially on Microsoft Designer’s text-to-image tool, Decker said.
How the images went viral
Sexually explicit and abusive fake images of Taylor Swift started circulating widely last week on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. These deepfake porn images of Taylor Swift has made her the most famous victim of a scourge that tech platforms and anti-abuse groups have been struggling to resolve. The Swift images reportedly first emerged from an ongoing campaign that began last year on fringe platforms to produce sexually explicit AI-generated images of celebrity women, told Ben Decker, founder of the threat intelligence group Memetica, to news agency AP. One of the Swift images that went viral is said to have appeared online as early as January 6. The researchers found at least a couple dozen unique AI-generated images. The most widely shared were football-related, showing a painted or bloodied Swift that objectified her and in some cases inflicted violent harm on her deepfake persona.

Indian IT giant Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is setting goals for France, aiming to double its workforce within three years as the European nation becomes one of its fastest-growing markets. This bullish outlook comes from Sapthagiri Chapalapalli, head of TCS‘ European business, who revealed the company’s plans to news agency PTI on Thursday.
France’s importance for TCS is evident in its current footprint. With 1,600 employees across four major centers, including the aviation hub of Toulouse and the education hub of Poitiers, the company has established a strong foundation. Notably, 60% of its French staff are local citizens, demonstrating commitment to the community.
Chapalapalli attributes the projected growth to several factors, including:
* Strong market performance: France is outpacing TCS’ overall European growth, indicating significant potential.
* Established presence: Three decades of experience in the country have laid the groundwork for accelerated expansion.
* Deep client relationships: TCS collaborates with 80 leading French companies across diverse sectors, fostering trust and loyalty.
* Innovation focus: The company operates an innovation center in Paris, showcasing its commitment to cutting-edge technology solutions.
The hiring push will not be concentrated solely in Paris. TCS plans to expand its existing centers and potentially establish new ones to tap into the talent pool across the country. Furthermore, Chapalapalli highlights the increased openness of French companies in recent years, citing it as a key driver of TCS’ success. This aligns with the ongoing visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to India, further solidifying the bilateral relationship and business opportunities.
In the competitive landscape, Chapalapalli emphasizes TCS’ unique strengths. By positioning itself as a “solid French company” and leveraging its global expertise, the company aims to stand out from rivals like Capgemini.
Overall, TCS’ ambitious plans for France paint a picture of rapid growth and a commitment to the local market. The company’s focus on innovation, strong client relationships, and talent acquisition will be key to achieving its goals and solidifying its position as a leading IT player in France

Telecom Department Orders Probe After 750 Million Users' Data Leaked: Report |
Telecom Department Orders Probe After 750 Million Users’ Data Leaked: Report |

[ad_1]

Cybersecurity firm CloudSEK last week claimed in a report that hackers are selling 1.8TB database containing details of 750 million Indian mobile consumers on the dark web. In response to claims made by the firm, the Department of Telecom (DoT) has asked service operators to conduct security audits of their systems.
Citing CloudSEK, news agency PTI reported that the hacker, however, has denied involvement in the breach, saying the data was acquired through undisclosed means within law enforcement channels.
“The DoT has asked telecom operators to get a security audit of their systems,” a senior government official was quoted as saying. The officer, however, said that telecom operators have informally told the department that the leaked information appears to be a compilation of old data sets rather than a vulnerability within their systems
The department has nonetheless urged operators to undertake security audits as a precautionary measure.
What CloudSEK’s report said
CloudSEK claimed in its report that its researchers have found that CYBO CREW affiliates CyboDevil and UNIT8200 have advertised a massive Indian Mobile Network Consumer Database for sale.
“This extensive mobile network database contains sensitive details belonging to a staggering 750 million individuals. It includes critical information like names, mobile numbers, addresses, and Aadhaar details. The sheer size of this dataset, totaling 1.8 terabytes, presents an alarming threat to security,” CloudSEK said in its report.
The firm, which engages with government cyber security CERT-In, said the breach, which CloudSEK discovered on January 23, prompted the firm to follow responsible disclosure practices by informing relevant authorities and impacted organisations.
“The data, available for sale, is compressed to 600GB and uncompressed to 1.8 TB, posing significant risks to both individuals and organisations. The threat actor has demanded USD 3,000 for the entire dataset,” the report said.
Sparsh Kulshrestha, threat intelligence and security researcher at CloudSEK, said the sample provided by the threat actor has been verified, with the associated mobile numbers spanning across major Indian telecom operators and the Aadhaar numbers confirmed as valid.
