Samsung has made a big deal of the new materials used in the recently launched Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra – namely a titanium frame and new Gorilla Glass Armor – and now a YouTube video has given us some idea of just how durable those materials actually are.
YouTuber and repair expert Zack Nelson of JerryRigEverything put the upgraded endurance of the Galaxy S24 Ultra to the test as part of his smartphone durability test series, with the Galaxy S24 Ultra not only surviving but passing with flying colors.
The phone’s all-new titanium frame and Corning Gorilla Armour glass front should make the Galaxy S24 Ultra among the toughest phones ever and a notable upgrade over its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.
Tough as a Gorilla
Corning Gorilla Armour is a unique addition to the S24 Ultra. Corning claims that Gorilla Armour is superior to the Gorilla Glass Victus and Victus 2 used in most other flagship phones, and says that in addition to being tough, it reduces screen glare by 75%, as seen in the video, in which the Galaxy S24 Ultra is compared to the much older Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus.
The resistance of the screen was tested by using progressively harder tools rated on the Mohs scale of hardness, which runs from 1 to 10. The screen is then divided from 1 to 10 with corresponding harder tools used as the number progresses resulting in initial no marks, then light grazes to eventually deep cuts and gouges.
The Galaxy S24 Ultra appears unyielding to the first several levels of hardness, with lines only beginning to appear on the screen at level 7, however, they appear faint and shouldn’t impact the phone’s operation much.
Nelson then comments on how the new glass even feels slightly different, stating his tools began to feel the depth of fracturing at much later levels than usual, at around levels 7 and 8.
The video shows that the Corning Gorilla Armour does seem to resist the micro-scratches that you’d typically see from key scratches and day-to-day use, providing an improved level of protection over previous types of Gorilla Glass. And even with level-7 scratches on the screen, the fingerprint scanner still functioned well.
I am titanium
Using the same tools scratches and deep cuts are then administered to the titanium frame, with Nelson noting that titanium resistance begins to show damage at around level 6 and that more typical aluminum frames are usually rated around level 3, which suggests the S24 Ultra’s frame offers a significant improvement in terms of durability.
Samsung doesn’t list the grade of titanium used, although these test results suggest it’s a significant upgrade on the aluminum used in the previous Samsung phones. Titanium is graded for strength on a scale from 1 to 12, with lower grades being weaker, and 12 being noted for its extreme heat and corrosion resistance.
Samsung has likely used grade 5, which is the same grade as the titanium used in Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. It’s also commonly used in spacecraft, naval ships, and racing cars as one of the hardest metals known to man, however, it is also much more expensive to produce.
When Nelson attempts to bend the Galaxy S24 Ultra with his hands, the phone gives very little, not bending or breaking under pressure. I recommend watching the video for a detailed breakdown of the Samsung S24 Ultra’s incredible resistance.
Resistance isn’t futile
While the overall look and design of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra haven’t changed much over its predecessor, it seems clear that the upgraded materials will make a big difference to the phone’s durability.
And its ability to withstand severe punishment as well as everyday wear and tear, may just set a new standard for ultra-premium devices that could last much longer, making them a much better investment.
Embark Studios has released the mid-season update for The Finals which introduces a limited-time seasonal event.
The free-to-play squad-based shooter got a surprise launch back in December and has been receiving steady updates ever since, like addressing balance issues while also adding new content, like the Solo Bank It mode.
Now, with update 1.6.0, Embark has added another solo event called Steal the Spotlight, which puts the in-game arena into a nighttime setting with more risks.
“In this solo event, you enter the arena at night with a set build and loadout. Lights are out and cashout stations are guarded by turrets and tripwires, and the best path might just be the one you make yourself – so keep that RPG handy,” Embark Studios says in the latest patch notes.
In addition, playing Steal the Spotlight this week will unlock a brand-new “dazzling” cosmetic bundle for players to enjoy. However, as Steal the Spotlight gets added, this means that the temporary Solo Bank It mode has been removed and it’s unclear when it will be added back.
“Thank you so much to everyone who played this experimental mode and provided feedback!” the studio said. “We learned so much and we look forward to bringing you more experimental modes in the future.”
Another significant update addresses Recon Senses, which now no longer have infinite sight and instead have “limited reach” and will also notify the player if they’re spotted. You can read the full patch notes below.

Samsung is expected to launch its next-gen foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 around August. Rumours suggest that the Korean tech giant is planning to include multiple upgrades to the upcoming clamshell foldables. Samsung is reportedly planning to pack a battery with higher capacity and better camera setup with the Galaxy Z Flip 6.This smartphone will succeed the Galaxy Z Flip 5 which was launched in July 2023. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6: What to expect According to a report by Dutch publication Galaxy Club, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is expected to carry a 4,000mAh battery unit. For comparison, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 carries a 3,700 mAh battery unit. Due to the form-factor, the foldables have two battery units. The report claims that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 will carry a 1,097mAh and 2,790mAh cell, totaling a rated capacity of 3,887mAh. Just like the Galaxy S24 series (which is also rated at 3,880mAh), Samsung is expected to advertise the Galaxy Z Flip 6’s battery capacity at 4,000mAh, the report adds.
Samsung’s One UI also claims to extend battery life on devices it runs. So, at this battery capacity, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is expected to offer an efficient performance. Another 9to5Google report claims that Samsung may also upgrade the display and camera of the Galaxy Z Flip 6. The upcoming clamshell phone may support a wider aspect ratio and may house a 50MP camera setup to bring it to the level of the company’s latest flagship smartphone lineup, the Galaxy S24 series.
Alan Wake 2 first update of the year has added a brand-new feature to the game alongside a host of quality-of-life improvements.
Patch 1.15 went live today (January 31) on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC and it’s a fairly significant patch, introducing the highly-requested Chapter Select feature which will allow players who have unlocked and completed certain missions to replay them again from the menu.
“This will also make a life bit easier (and we know we’ve made it a bit complicated with some collectibles having to be picked up in a single run) for Trophy and Achievement hunters to get those missing items or collectibles,” Remedy Entertainment said in the patch notes.
It’s also noted that using Chapter Select will load a pre-made save game “regardless of your own progression” and item progression and inventory will be “pre-determined depending on the mission.”
If you’ve played the horror game, you’ll know that throughout the story terrifying visuals will pop up on screen to scare the daylights out of you. As requested, an option to choose between Low and Normal horror flash visual and audio intensity has also been added for those who prefer not to get jump-scared as badly.
In addition to these two new features, players can expect to find a bunch of story mission bugs to be fixed – including an issue in The Final Chapter (in New Game Plus) where if the player already had Saga’s crossbow in their inventory, they’d be unable to complete a certain quest.
Alongside general visual polish, the PC now has improved DLSS Frame Generation stability when the player Alt-Tabs, and the Field of View (FOV) in the UI can now be tweaked. You can read the full patch notes below.
Alan Wake 2 version 1.15 patch notes:

You can now choose to play any mission in the game that you have previously unlocked.
Using this feature loads a pre-made save game regardless of your own progression.

You will keep your previous manual saves.
NOTE: Remember to keep at least one manual save with your previous progression if you wish to retain it.
New features
Added Chapter Select menu.
Added option to choose between Low and Normal horror flash visual and audio intensity.

During RE09 Deerfest when you go to the Oh Deer Diner, the last Koskela commercial is shown and you are given a prompt that you can see it in the Mind Place, but if you press the touchpad as instructed to view it in the Mind Place, nothing happens, and your controls are frozen. The issue remains until you reload the last save.
Fixed an issue where the player was not able to collect all the clues around Nightingale’s body.
The objects required for the Overlap ritual in RE03 Local Girl can now only be picked up after the player finds their respective clues.
The 10th Echo Scene after meeting Casey in the alley now unlocks properly.

Propane tanks will no longer reappear after reloading the game in Watery. Less explosions, less fun, but a smoother game.
Gave Saga a chance to gain more resources in the RE10 Come Home mission in the subway station.

Removing the fun. It’s the beginning of the year. Explosions will no longer deal damage through doors.
Prevent players from accidentally boosting the flashlight and wasting batteries when picking it up.
FBI Service pistol and Revolver now deal enough damage to make cultists’ masks fly off with one, carefully aimed shot.
Curtain Call. Not the best album. Fixed curtains being incorrectly closed in the Theater Hall in some instances.
Fixed an issue where the crossbow with double-barrel upgrade was not being holstered properly.
Saga’s phone conversations can’t be interrupted by switching the Flashlight on and off anymore.
The item pickup indicator has been re-tuned, so the indicator should be more easily visible now.
The player can no longer run off the ledge behind the Monitoring Station in Cauldron Lake.

A growing number of Fitbit Charge 5 owners are complaining that a recent software update has bricked their fitness tracker – but Fitbit has now denied that the issue is firmware-related.
A pinned post at the top of the official Charge 5 forum for the device’s most recent firmware (version 194.91) now has over 400 comments, with many owners complaining that their updated tracker now loses charge overnight or is even “completely unresponsive”.
We’ve asked Google, which has owned Fitbit since 2019, for an up-to-date response on the issues and what might be causing them. So far, Google has only issued a statement to the BBC denying that the Charge 5’s firmware update is causing the problems.
In that statement, a Google spokesperson said: “We’re still investigating this issue, but can confirm it is not due to the recent firmware update.” The tech giant added that “users should continue to update their devices to the latest firmware and contact Fitbit Customer service at help.fitbit.com if they encounter any issues.”
But this is unlikely to quash the growing frustration on Fitbit forums, where some users are understandably regretting updating their Charge 5 and have even (in the case of forum user ‘Gevans1388’) been offered a 35% discount off a new Fitbit when they reported the issues.
Some users have suggested restarting the Fitbit or doing a factory reset, which involves going to Settings > Device Info > Clear User Data, then pressing the ‘Hold 3 Sec’ button for three seconds and releasing. But this isn’t something Google or Fitbit has recommended and it isn’t an option if your device is unresponsive.
We’ll update this article as soon as we hear back from Fitbit.
Another Fitbit furore
These Charge 5 issues are the latest in a long line of controversies and calamities that have taken place since Google acquired Fitbit in 2019. Most recently, Fitbit has had to extend a fig leaf to furious fans in the form of several highly-requested app fixes.
It should be stated that not all Charge 5 owners are having issues following the 194.91 software update. For example, forum user ‘bbunge’ said they updated “without a hitch” and that battery life was actually “better by a couple of days” with the new firmware. Google’s current stance is also that the firmware isn’t causing any of the reported issues.
Yet the overwhelming consensus from the hundreds of Fitbit forum comments is that various issues, from battery drain to a completely unresponsive device, have arisen following that most recent firmware update. And while last year’s app redesign was more of an inconvenience, these seemingly software-driven problems are understandably causing more anger.
We’ll be following up again with Google and Fitbit soon and will update this article as soon as we hear any further advice about what you should do if you’ve been hit by any of these Charge 5 issues.
The Reserve Bank of India on Wednesday ordered Paytm Payments Bank Ltd., a unit of One 97 Communications Ltd., to stop its popular mobile wallet business along with other activities, citing persistent non-compliance and supervisory concerns. The regulator said the firm, which processes transactions for India’s digital payments giant Paytm, must stop its banking activities after Feb. 29.
How are customers affected?
Existing customers, however, can withdraw their funds and use up the balance in the prepaid cards or wallets without any restrictions, the RBI said.
Setback after setback
The latest decision comes nearly two years after the regulator barred the bank, from taking on new customers because it violated certain rules, Bloomberg News had reported. Founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma had then said the bank is fully compliant with Indian rules.
The RBI had asked the bank, which operates under a restricted license that doesn’t allow it to lend but accept deposits up to 200,000 rupees ($2,408.4) per account, to stop onboarding customers pending an audit of its information technology system.
On Wednesday, the woes for the bank seem to have worsened with the regulator making scathing observations about its business.
“The comprehensive system audit report and subsequent compliance validation report of the external auditors revealed persistent non-compliances and continued material supervisory concerns in the bank, warranting further supervisory action,” the RBI said in a statement on its website.
The RBI said the bank will not be allowed to take any further deposits or conduct credit transactions or carry out top ups on any customer accounts, prepaid instruments, wallets, cards for paying road tolls after Feb 29. Interest, cashbacks, or refunds can be credited anytime.
Also, special purpose accounts of parent firm One97 Communications Ltd and Paytm Payments Services Ltd., used to make settlements are to be terminated at the earliest and no later than Feb 29, the RBI said. All settlements in the pipeline will have to be completed by March 15, the central bank added.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians hasn’t been renewed for a second season yet, but its writing team is already hard at work on its scripts.
In a Variety article posted after Percy Jackson‘s season 1 finale aired on Disney Plus today (January 31), co-showrunner Jon Steinberg dropped a huge hint over the hit fantasy show’s future. Indeed, the fate of the Walker Scobell-starring TV show is still up in the air, but Steinberg suggested that a second season was likely to happen, given that its writers’ room has re-assembled to outline the direction of a potential sequel.
“There is an awareness on everyone’s part that the demand for the show seems to suggest we should probably not stop making it,” Steinberg said. He later added that he, fellow co-showrunner Dan Shotz, and their fellow scribes were “making great progress” on Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2, even though Disney hasn’t officially greenlit it.

In a separate chat with TV Insider, Scobell – who plays the titular demigod – revealed that he was in the dark over the series’ possible renewal, saying: “We really have no idea [if the show has been renewed yet]. Nobody’s telling us anything.”
However, he also offered hope to the show’s sizable fanbase about a potential second installment, adding: “I hope that we’re out in the sun a lot, so I’m not transparent anymore! I’m guessing since we’re outside a lot, we’re probably going to be more on location. So it’ll be fun to be there and be close to the water, be outside, touch grass.”
Cooking up a storm
If Percy Jackson and the Olympians is renewed for another outing, it’ll be a remarkable turnaround for the Rick Riordan-created young adult (YA) fantasy franchise.
The author’s book series is beloved by many, but there were plenty of people who criticized Percy Jackson‘s two big-screen adventures in the early 2010s – Riordan among them. Indeed, speaking exclusively to TechRadar ahead of the franchise’s live-action Disney Plus adaptation, Riordan admitted that the movies “just didn’t resonate” with audiences in a similar manner to its YA fantasy genre cousins Harry Potter or Twilight.
Rather than use the film flops as an excuse to pass on future adaptations, though, Riordan agreed to partner with Disney on a TV adaptation for one of the world’s best streaming services. It’s a decision that’s paid off, too, with Percy Jackson and the Olympians proving incredibly popular.
Per a January 16 Deadline report, its premiere eclipsed 26 million views in its first three weeks on the service, albeit that figure was bolstered by its first two entries simultaneously debuting on Hulu in the US. On January 25, Deadline also revealed the show’s first three episodes had accrued a total of 700 million minutes viewed – an increase of 22% from the previous week.

As long as Percy Jackson‘s TV adaptation has continued its upward trajectory with episodes four through eight – we’ll find out how many people watched each episode in the weeks to come – Disney would be silly not to confirm a second season.
Of course, much will depend on how cost-effective the series has been, but given that it’s been popular enough to become one of the best Disney Plus shows of recent times, its renewal appears to be a mere formality. That’s in spite of our spoiler-free thoughts on Percy Jackson’s first few episodes – indeed, we said it “wasn’t a Greek tragedy, but it’s not a god-tier Disney Plus show, either“.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1 is available to stream in full on Disney Plus.
