Obsidian game directors keen on Fallout New Vegas “graphical remaster”

Obsidian game directors Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky have expressed excitement at the idea of a Fallout New Vegas “graphical remaster”.

Speaking in an interview with TheGamer.com concerning the unveiling of The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition’s impending release, Cain and Boyarsky said that a remastered version of New Vegas would be “awesome” (via TheGamer (opens in new tab)).

Though Cain stressed that the decision wasn’t “up to [him]”, both directors seem very keen on the idea of a “graphical remaster” for the fan-favorite classic.

Originally released in 2011, Fallout: New Vegas tells the story of a courier’s journey through the post-apocalyptic wastes of the Mojave desert. The immersive, open-world experience sees the player negotiate a tense political standoff between several different factions as the remnants of human civilization vie for control over New Vegas – one of the few major cities to survive the nuclear war between China and the United States.

In the same interview, The Outer Worlds production director Eric DeMilt spoke as to why New Vegas resonates so strongly with fans: “when it came out, it had stability issues, [but] it’s overcome those and now people are able to get back to that game, because those characters and stories are just rich, and people want to be in there.”

A kick in the head

Cain and Boyarsky’s excitement comes off of the back of the recently announced The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition, a comprehensive and polished repackaging of The Outer Worlds complete with touched-up graphics, gameplay tweaks, and a complete roster of DLC for players to enjoy.

Given that Outer Worlds is something of a spiritual successor to New Vegas, it’s only natural that discussion would veer towards Obsidian’s earlier work, too. Though nothing has been confirmed as of yet, it’s exciting to think that a New Vegas remaster might be on the cards in the future.

New Vegas offered a distinctive RPG experience that has stayed with me to this day. However, my attempts to revisit the harsh and absurd world of the Mojave have often been stymied by the game’s dated graphics. As I made my way towards New Vegas in the game’s opening act, despite the compelling writing and immersive setting, I found the game’s relentless muddiness to be overwhelming. Despite my best efforts, I simply couldn’t stick with my playthrough.

Though I hate to admit it, I have clearly been spoiled by modern titles. It would be wonderful to see New Vegas receive a much-needed new coat of paint. It would be a real treat for a classic title as well-regarded as New Vegas to receive much-deserved love and attention in the form of a graphical remaster.

Elon Musk might be working on an ‘anti-woke’ version of ChatGPT – and that sucks for AI

The explosion in popularity of the ChatGPT artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot is one to be admired and feared (just a little), and we’re seeing more and more companies scramble to include it in their products as quickly as possible. Meta and Twitter are likely to be next in the Silicon Valley Scramble for AI, and no one seems to be sure what this might mean for users.

We’ve already witnessed the breakdowns of Microsoft’s new ChatGPT-powered Bing and how quickly Microsoft had to act to try and fix the issues the chatbot was facing. A lot of the fixes that had to be made were centred around the way people interacted with Bing AI, ‘jailbreaking’ the bot, getting inaccurate answers and how the bot generally freaked out when confronted with its own existence. A relatable feeling, sure, but these are all problems that had to be dealt with swiftly because of how rushed the rollout of the product was.

Without proper foresight, it’s likely that we’ll continue to see numerous errors (and rushed fixes) because AI-powered technology in the hands of the general public is unpredictable and at times divisive. Google’s own employees aren’t a fan of its version, Google Bard, for example.

So, it’s a bit concerning to see social media giants starting to take interest in this AI boom.

Twitter is apparently considering implementing AI into the platform by developing an alternative to ChatGPT. Late last year Twitter CEO Elon Musk criticised OpenAI – the developers of ChatGPT – for putting safeguards in place that would prevent the chatbot from producing responses that could offend users.

This included the bot repeating racial slurs, sexist ideologies or drafting inappropriate content. Musk titled ChatGPT’s safeguarding measures as ‘training AI to be woke’ which, while a bizarre thing to say, could give us an insight into what his rival chatbot could be like.

Musk has reportedly recruited Igor Babuschkin, a researcher who recently left Google’s patent company Alphabets’ DeepMind AI unit, and specializes in machine learning models that power chatbots like ChatGPT. We’re uncertain how exactly AI could be injected into Twitter, but Musk’s previous comments decrying the ‘woke’ limits OpenAI put in place, give us concern that its implementation could be offensive, derogatory, and downright toxic.

Facebook has joined the chat

Twitter isn’t the only social media platform eyeing up AI. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg put up a post (opens in new tab) announcing a new group at Meta (Facebook’s parent company) that will be focused on ‘generative AI’ to boost its products.

The focus seems to be on creating its own AI-powered tools in the short term (probably akin to Microsoft and Google’s attempts) and in the longer term, weaving AI more intricately into Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger and Instagram. This means, for the ChatGPT and AI sceptics, unfortunately, that few social media platforms are going to be safe from the clutches of rushed AI.

Zuckerberg’s announcement is a little vague, but some of the examples we’re given are creative filters and ad formats on Instagram and enhanced text features for Whatsapp and Messenger. Zuckerberg admits there’s a lot of ‘foundational work to do’ before any of these features are rolled out, which gives us hope that they may be more thought out than their predecessors.

One thing is for sure: it may become harder to avoid the AI influence for much longer and if there’s one silver lining here, we can only hope developers learn from mistakes and mishaps and make the contagious technology better, not quicker. ChatGPT with safeguarding measures in place is still a wild beast to tame at the best of times and is still prone to spitting out hateful language when ‘broken’ or prompted just the right way. The idea of Musk’s ‘anti-woke’ rhetoric seeping into something as complex and unpredictable as AI technology spells nothing but safety concerns for users actively participating in the emerging technology sphere of AI chatbots, and for those of us that are not. It seems like in the mad dash to do it quickly and do it better, companies have not considered how the technology will spill out into more general areas of the internet or into spaces that are not equipt for it.

The hope is that these developers come up with useful tools that will benefit a majority of users and stay contained in their defined purpose, though we cannot be sure of it right now and perhaps bracing for the worst and hoping for the best is a more realistic strategy.

Should we see more AI leak into our social media spheres we’ll have to be more focused on promoting transparency and safety for users not quite acquainted with ChatGPT and its emerging versions, and those of us directly affected by ‘anti-woke’ nonsense propaganda may have to gear up for a turbulent time online.

This major encryption boost means that even Gmail can’t read your emails

Client-side encryption (CSE), a means of protecting and controlling access to personal or corporate data, has arrived for Gmail.

In a blog post (opens in new tab) announcing the news, the tech giant notes that, while Google Workspace already encrypts data using secure cryptographic libraries, CSE gives Workspace users and admins “total control” over their cryptographic keys and access to data.

Simply put, this should mean that no-one can read sent emails or calendar entries but those in an organization and the recipients.

A Gmail encryption history

As The Verge (opens in new tab) points out, Google has been trying to bring CSE to Gmail since 2014 (opens in new tab).

In those halcyon days, the aftermath of Edward Snowden’s disclosure of the US’ National Security Agency’s (NSA) totally legal and constitutional (*fingers crossed behind back*) surveillance programmes meant that data privacy protections were on the whole world’s mind.

The leading encryption solution back then was Pretty Good Privacy (PGP), an open-source standard that had, at the time, endured for twenty years while being wholly unintuitive to an end user, who wouldn’t, for instance, be able to reset a forgotten password, because even Google wouldn’t keep them on file.

Google made CSE available for other Workspace applications in October 2022, including its Drive cloud storage solution, Docs, Sheets and Slides, as well as its Meet video conferencing software.

CSE finally arriving for Gmail, Google Calendar, and the whole raft of Workspace apps suggests that a middle-ground has been found. Those who work in industries reliant on privacy seem optimistic about it too.

“Client-side encryption gives us the next level of privacy, to ensure integrity within the journalistic process,” said Sacha Morard, Chief Technology Officer of media conglomerate (and Google Workspace customer) Groupe Le Monde.

“This allows us to guarantee a higher level of security for our journalists, and to protect our sensitive content.”

OnePlus is working on a foldable phone, and it’s launching this year

OnePlus has had a busy time at MWC 2023, showing off a OnePlus 11 Concept phone, letting us deliver a hands-on OnePlus Pad review, and revealing a OnePlus 45W Liquid Cooler. But the company might have saved the best for last.

In a panel hosted by TechRadar’s Senior Phones Editor Alex Walker-Todd, we learned from Kinder Liu, President and COO of OnePlus, that the company is building its first foldable phone, and plans to launch the device before the end of 2023.

Specifically, this OnePlus foldable is set to land in the second half of the year, so sometime between July and December.

Speaking about the phone, Liu said: “Our first foldable phone will have the signature OnePlus fast and smooth experience. It must be a flagship phone that doesn’t settle because of its folding form, in terms of industrial design, mechanical technology, and other aspects. We want to launch a device that aims to be at the pinnacle experience of today’s foldable market.”

So it sounds like this will be a no-compromise phone, and will probably also therefore be very expensive. That said, most OnePlus phones – including the OnePlus 11 – are slightly cheaper than a lot of their rivals, so there’s some hope that the same might be true of the company’s first foldable.

OnePlus hasn’t revealed anything else about this phone yet, but it has said that more information will be revealed in the coming months. This is a company that tends to drip-feed information ahead of launches though, so we may well learn most of the details before the OnePlus foldable is fully unveiled.

Analysis: it could be similar to the Oppo Find N2

While OnePlus hasn’t said more about its foldable phone, there are some clues as to the form it might take.

For one thing, we’ve heard rumors of a OnePlus foldable for a while, and the more recent ones suggested that it might be based on the Oppo Find N, which was only available in China.

OnePlus is a subsidiary of Oppo, so that’s certainly a possibility; although since we heard these leaks, the Oppo Find N2 launched, so basing the OnePlus foldable on the newer phone seems more likely.

The Oppo Find N2 is also only available in China (though the Oppo Find N2 Flip has launched more widely) so in most of the world it wouldn’t be a competitor to a OnePlus device.

This is just speculation though, so don’t be surprised if the OnePlus foldable is something completely different; but for reference, the Oppo Find N2 has a 7.1-inch 1792 x 1920 foldable display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a 5.54-inch 1080 x 2120 cover screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, and a 4,520mAh battery with 67W charging.

It also has a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset, up to 16GB of RAM, up to 512GB of storage, and a triple-lens camera with a 50MP wide snapper, a 48MP ultrawide, and a 32MP telephoto with 2x optical zoom. That’s an impressive assortment of specs, so if the OnePlus foldable is based on this then it could have a great shot at ranking among the best foldable phones.

Human brain cells are trouncing computers in raw speed and power

Scientists are using human brain cells to create biocomputers that offer “unprecedented advances in computing speed, processing power, data efficiency and storage capabilities” over the current zeitgeist in computer processing, artificial intelligence (AI).

Per an article (opens in new tab) in academic journal Frontiers in Science (FiS), scientists note that this form of biocomputing, known as organoid intelligence (OI), is a natural progression because AI was inspired by our understanding of the human brain.

OI is driven by lab-grown cell-cultures known as brain organoids, three-dimensional clusters of brain cells, sharing structures, such as neurons and other cells that power our capacity for memory and to learn.

Organoid intelligence

This certainly sounds impressive, but, just like AI, OI has to break the skepticism barrier on its own. After all, isn’t the reason why we defer most of the tasks in our daily lives to computers precisely because they operate faster than we do?

Thomas Hartung, Professor at John Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public Health, thinks that trying to get computers to think like humans is less effective than simply making the human element central to a computer.

“Silicon-based computers are certainly better with numbers,” Hartung explained. “For example, AlphaGo [an AI that beat the world’s #1 Go player in 2017] was trained on data from 160,000 games. A person would have to play five hours a day for more than 175 years to experience that many games.”

“[But] we’re reaching the physical limits of silicon computers because we cannot pack more transistors into a tiny chip. The brain is wired completely differently. It has about 100bn neurons linked through over 1015 connection points. It’s an enormous power difference compared to our current technology.”

Hartung also claimed that brains are more energy efficient that the computers powering AI models. “For instance, the amount of energy spent training AlphaGo is more than is needed to sustain an active adult for a decade.”

OI is still in its infancy and has several shortcomings, not least that brain organoids currently contain about 50,000 cells when, to be practical, this needs to be scaled up to “10 million”, according to Hartung.

And just like with AI, there are ethical concerns, though the idea that actual human brains can develop consciousness is perhaps more pressing than the notion that a computer could.

Still, in December 2022, one of the FiS article’s co-authors, Dr. Brett Kagan, authored a study (opens in new tab) where a flat brain cell structure learned to play Pong, and the science community has bigger plans for the technology.

For instance, Hartung notes that “personalized brain organoids” can be cultured from adult skin cells, allowing scientists to study the effects of neurological conditions, such as Alzheimers, and test the effects of certain substances on learning and memory processing.

The challenge from here, he says, is building up a scientific community willing to investigate OI further.

AI having its day in the sun suggests that this is a realistic goal, but we have, in all likelihood, a long time – years, perhaps decades – to go before the technology is in any way usable or bearable within an enterprise setting. That’s never stopped us from reporting on cool, far-off future developments like DNA storage before, though.

WhatsApp’s new update allows users to convert any photo into sticker on iPhone

WhatsApp introduced Sticker support back in 2018 and since its inception, the instant messaging platform has introduced a couple of first-party stickers packs for users. In addition to this, the platform has always allowed users to create custom sticker packs. However, the custom sticker-making process wasn’t natively built into the app and required users to rely on several third-party apps to add stickers on WhatsApp.
WABetaInfo, the website that tracks changes in WhatsApp, has reported that WhatsApp has silently added a new feature to the iOS version of the app that allows users to quickly convert their gallery photos into WhatsApp stickers without the need for any third-party app.
According to the report, the feature is available with the WhatsApp iPhone version 23.3.77 and is now available for download via Apple App Store.
WhatsApp gets native custom sticker maker on iPhone: How it works
With the introduction of this new feature, users can simply choose a photo from their iPhone album and convert it into a WhatsApp sticker. But, things aren’t as simple as it sounds.
WhatsApp hasn’t exactly added any specific option for custom stickers. It basically relies on iOS 16’s API that separates the subject from an image by long pressing on it and drag and drop gestures.
Once the subject is separated, users can drag and drop it in a WhatsApp conversation to convert it into a sticker.
All that said, the feature only works with iPhones running iOS 16 operating system. Older versions of iOS do not have this feature and hence WhatsApp new feature won’t be on devices running iOS 15 or older.
How to create custom WhatsApp sticker from a photo

Open the Photos app on your iPhone
Select a photo and tap and hold on it to separate the subject from the image
Now, drag and drop the subject into any WhatsApp conversation
Once done, WhatsApp will ask you if you want to convert this into a sticker.

Once a sticker is created, it stays in the WhatsApp sticker collection and can be used again for other conversations.

Apple silicon allows to bring ‘game changing’ features to iPhone

Apple flipped the playbook as we knew it when it launched its own silicon powered MacBooks. The M-series of processors has got the conversation around Apple silicon grow louder but, in fact, it has been at the heart and soul of almost every Apple product.
Bob Borchers, vice president, worldwide product marketing, Apple was in the country and spoke at length about the impact of Apple silicon. “The Apple silicon powers our products and gives us a chance to bringing the best to users both in terms of software and hardware,” Borchers told The Times of India-GadgetsNow.
Borchers is an old Apple hand and a genuine authority to talk about how the Apple silicon has changed all things iPhone. One of the big impact of the Apple silicon has been on the iPhone cameras. Over the years, Apple has relied heavily on its hardware and software to deliver what we like to call the most consistent camera system.
It hasn’t been easy but Borchers says that it is because “we can design our products together with the design of the Apple silicon, we can create experiences that are unheard of.” Citing the example of the recent Vishal Bhardwaj film “Fursat”, Borchers says that shows the power of Apple silicon. It has replaced those giant cameras which were used for filmmaking. According to Borchers, it is because of Apple silicon that the company has been able to bring “game changing features” like the Action Mode on the iPhone.

Apple’s focus: What consumers want

There’s a school of thought that argues perhaps Apple has put in too many smarts in the iPhone camera. Borchers argues otherwise. “We make an attempt to give a balance in terms of what our customers might want or the ‘pros’ can have.” There are different needs for different customers but Borchers says that “there is no compromise in terms of what an average consumer might like or a professional photographer might like,” he adds.
One of the big things that the Apple silicon has managed to do in the last couple of years is improve the battery performance of the iPhone. Borchers says that every generation of iPhone — and with that Apple silicon — has been designed keeping performance at the forefront. Apple doesn’t change a particular spec or a number that might be a headline act. “Instead, what we focus is on real utility, like delivering all-day battery life and not what is the mAh capacity,” he says.
For Borchers — who has degrees from Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology — the goal is to deliver to customers what it wants. “We can do that with a combination of software, hardware, and anything that gives users what will benefit them the most,” he says.
