Google’s next 4K Chromecast remote will wave goodbye to batteries

Google looks to have plans to change the worst thing about its TV remotes, and it’s the same thing that’s terrible about an awful lot of controllers: batteries.

Rather than relying on annoying replaceable cells, the new Google TV remote reference design from TW Electronics – the company that produces Google TV remotes – features a photovoltaic panel. This new light-powered remote would be able to self-charge, meaning it’ll (hopefully) never run out of charge or need its battery replaced, provided it gets enough light.

Netflix is pushing customers towards signing up to its ads-free basic tier, despite suggesting it never would.

As spotted by streaming industry insider Andrew Freedman (opens in new tab) (and first reported by Cord Busters (opens in new tab)), Netflix is trying to encourage potential subscribers to sign up to its ads-supported basic tier, rather than its traditional basic tier.

Nvidia’s Lovelace laptop GPUs are inbound and we already knew portables carrying these RTX 4000 graphics cards would debut in February, but now we’ve heard exactly when the various cards should be emerging next month.
